What happens during a lower back spasm.
Muscle contraction — the deep stabilising muscles (like the erector spinae or quadratus lumborum) tighten abruptly. Protective reflex — the body tries to guard against perceived injury, but the contraction itself causes pain. Restricted movement — bending, twisting, or standing upright becomes difficult. Inflammation and nerve irritation — the spasm can compress nearby nerves, amplifying pain.
