Proton Therapy UK

Proton Therapy UK We’ve been serving the British community since 2012, before proton therapy became widely available

The Proton Therapy Center (PTC) located in Prague, Czech Republic, offers the most advanced and accurate form of radiotherapy currently available. Proton beam therapy, using pencil beam scanning, allows for a precise dose to be delivered to highly complicated target volumes while sparing nearby critical organs and healthy tissue. Since first opening in 2012, we have treated over 6,000 patients fro

m 50 countries, who have travelled to Prague for its high-quality treatment. We understand that travelling for treatment can be a daunting prospect and we aim to provide the highest quality of care and assistance to our patients.

🔵 May is Bladder and Skin Cancer Awareness Month in the UK. As with all oncological diagnoses, prevention and early diagnosis are key to better chances of successful treatment. Although we don't currently treat these types of cancer with proton therapy, we fully support raising awareness and broader knowledge regarding oncological diseases.

Is it better to stay active or rest during cancer treatment?

Many patients worry that physical activity might do more harm than good and assume that the best approach is to rest as much as possible. In fact, it's not that simple. 🙂

A growing body of research shows that moderate physical activity during and after treatment can improve physical fitness, help reduce the risk of complications, and positively influence overall quality of life. ❤️

On the other hand, a lack of movement can lead to muscle loss and general weakening of the body.

⚠️ That said, it's important to remember that exercise is not a substitute for treatment—and it's not about "the more, the better." The key is to listen to your body.

For example, after chemotherapy, fatigue can be significant 😴, and it's perfectly okay to slow down.

A simple and safe way to start? Something as easy as walking or taking a short stroll in nature. 🏞

Have you ever wondered how many proton therapy centres there are in the world? 🤔

There aren't many—just over 120. Currently, more than 50 additional centres are under construction or in the planning stages. 🌍 Most of these centres can be found in the United States and Europe. The number of centres in East Asia (especially Japan and China) is also growing rapidly.

On the other hand, in many parts of the world—such as Africa or parts of Latin America—patients don't have access to this treatment option at all.

The Proton Therapy Center in Prague was among the first of its kind in Europe when it opened in 2012 and today is considered one of the best centres in the world. 🏥

Proton radiotherapy is a powerful tool for destroying cancer cells with targeted precision. But emerging research led by the team at the Proton Therapy Center in Prague is revealing something even more exciting — its potential to activate the body's immune system and fight cancer beyond the treated area. Combining radiotherapy with immunotherapy could unlock a new era of cancer treatment — even gentler on healthy cells, and more powerful against cancer.

At the end of 2025, an international study published in the prestigious journal The Lancet revealed findings that could significantly influence the treatment of head and neck cancers. 📑

The research, led by MD Anderson Cancer Center, compared proton therapy with conventional (photon) radiotherapy in patients with oropharyngeal cancer over a five-year follow-up period. 🔎

The results showed a higher chance of long-term survival with proton therapy. The five-year overall survival rate reached 90.9% in patients treated with proton therapy, compared to 81% in those treated with traditional photon radiotherapy. 📊

At the same time, proton therapy was associated with a lower incidence of serious side effects.

In practice, this means for example:

🔵 less frequent swallowing difficulties (34–49% vs. 49%)

🔵 a lower need for feeding tubes during treatment (26.8% vs. 40.2%)

🔵 reduced dry mouth (33% vs. 45%)

🎗️ In March, the UK focuses heavily on cancer awareness, with campaigns for Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, Brain Tumour Awareness Month, Kidney Cancer Awareness Month and Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

We want to express our support for these efforts, as being informed about cancer risks, symptoms and types of treatment means being prepared to make the right decisions.

🚹 March is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, aiming to highlight that 1 in 8 men (1 in 4 for Black men) in the UK will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime. The risk increases for men over 50 and for those who have a family history of prostate cancer.

⚠️ As the most common cancer in men, it often has no early symptoms, making risk awareness vital. Early detection is key, as treatment at an early stage has high success rates.

📅 March the 4th is known as International HPV Awareness Day.

⚠️ Human papillomavirus (HPV) has many subtypes, and several of them are directly linked to various types of cancer, including cervical, a**l, and head and neck cancers. Of the latter, the incidence of tonsil cancer has been increasing rapidly in recent years, with HPV 16 confirmed in many patients.
