Take a Deep breath then remind yourself that you can sit with the big/ unwanted emotion / feeling for a while the chemical exchange happens, it will only last for 90 seconds - wait for the chemically high the fuelled response to pass- it only last longer when we continue to be scared of the feeling- adrenaline will always be released to prepare us for ANYTHING, real or a fake THREAt, it wants us to act upon it -
and as soon as you remind yourself with positive kind thoughts, as this can help to calm yourself down. Quicker- Good practise for ourselves as adults too, then we are ready to be there for that child/person who needs us to feel calm or safe. Connection is key.
This works but you got to do it with conviction and believe what you’re saying will help. Then the emotional part of our brain can start to relax and let go of the threat of the big feeling.

RSD Do you know what it stands for ? The latest Buzz words - what can it look like ?
Rejection sensitivity Dysphoria
Discovered by Dr. William Dodson
In the 1990’s. It comes to light now.
and it just might help to learn more

Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) is intense, overwhelming emotional pain triggered by real or perceived rejection, criticism, or failure, often linked to ADHD or neurodivergence. Unlike typical sadness, it feels physically painful or unbearable and often causes sudden mood shifts, extreme shame, or social withdrawal.

Do you or your child suffer with this in daily life ?

Note: While widely recognized in the neurodivergent community, RSD is not currently an official medical diagnosed.

PDA in children, a crib sheet is available to print off via the pages site.

PDA in children, a crib sheet is available to print off via the pages site.

A child who cannot put shoes on.
A child who explodes over homework.
A child who says “no” to everything.
A child who seems desperate to stay in control.

People often see bad behaviour.

But sometimes there is far more going on underneath.

Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a term used to describe children who experience an extreme need to avoid everyday demands and expectations. For many, demands can trigger intense anxiety, overwhelm or distress - especially when they feel pressured, unsafe or out of control.

These children are often labelled manipulative, oppositional, rude, lazy or attention seeking.

But many are struggling far more than people realise.

The heartbreaking part?
The more pressure they feel, the harder things can become.

Too many families are judged.
Too many children are punished instead of understood.

Please note - PDA is not currently recognised as a separate diagnosis in diagnostic manuals such as the DSM-5 or ICD-11. However, organisations including the NHS, the National Autistic Society and PDA Society use the term to describe and support children who show this pattern of behaviours and experiences.

Executive Brain breaks
Look like what ?

Make it movement anything they like
Make it fun
Create a box of brain break ideas written by them.
make sure they get a brain break when they are doing home work. Having a brain break before a task can help your child to focus more on the task in hand too.
