When your self esteem is low, self criticism and a more negative view of life can leave you less able to deal with life's day-to-day challenges. You may feel that you are not good enough or that you find it difficult to live up to your own or others expectations. Perhaps you have started avoiding certain situations as a result. Low self esteem might be manifesting itself in depression or anxiety and you might have developed unhelpful ways of coping.

We will help you to identify the negative messages and beliefs about yourself and to understand where these might have originated. We can also help you to look at ways to improve and change things for the better.

Meet Emma Bengough.

Emma is a certified and fully insured member of the BACP with a diploma in Person-Centred counselling who specialises in working with young people aged 7-18.

With so many complexities to growing up, especially now with the added challenge of social media and all its effects on a young mind, trying to maintain a healthy relationship with oneself and others becomes increasingly challenging.

It is easy to feel misunderstood, lonely, devalued or just not good enough in any way.

Emma says "I can offer that space for a young person to simply be who they really are, as they find their feet in the process of self-discovery. I offer genuine warmth, empathy and unconditional acceptance of who they are and what thoughts they choose to bring to the sessions and how they choose to express them.

What matters most to us and is the most important to you...

Research consistently shows that one of the most important factors in successful therapy is the quality of the relationship between you and your therapist.

We place great importance on creating that trusting connection.

Today is the United Nation's International Youth Day.

It is all about raising awareness of the challenges and opportunities facing young people around the world. Young people around the world live in different realities, yet they share common aspirations for dignity, opportunity, inclusion and a sustainable future.

We are really proud of the young people we see and love to support them to reach their own goals and aspirations, whatever they might be.

There is never a perfect time - it is about it being the right time for you. However, please remember you don't have to be in crises to support therapeutic support.

"How long does a session last? I'm just not sure I have the time"

Sessions are normally weekly and last for 50 minutes.

If you have any special requirements (for example around shift work), please discuss this in your initial contact with your therapist.

We want to help you make the time you require to get the support you need.

Why counselling modalities matter less than you might think....

If you are wondering how to choose a counsellor, scrolling through directories, or perhaps, even exploring this very website, you will see that different therapists will be described as "Integrative," "Humanistic," or "Psychodynamic”, for example. These words are likely to be unfamiliar and this jargon can feel confusing. You are likely to be left wondering, what does this mean? You may feel concerned about how much this matters and how to choose between them.

At Kingsclere Counselling Service, we don’t ever want to add extra stress or worry when it comes to choosing a therapist or counsellor. Therefore, in this blog, we will explain a little about the different counselling modalities. But, most importantly, we’ll reassure you that fundamentally the modality is often a small part of the consideration, when it comes to choosing a counsellor.

Meet Madeleine Duncan-Booth, a MBACP Counsellor.

Her core training integrated Person Centred and Psychodynamic theory. She then went on to take an advanced diploma in the therapeutic use of arts in therapy at IATE in London.

Clients who come to Madeleine explore:

• Anxiety
• Depression
• Bereavement
• Trauma
• Life changing events and/or illness
• Past events and how it is impacting them now
• Family/work/relationship dynamics – past and present
• Personal growth and identity
• Hopes and fears for the future

She is a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and fully insured.

Madeleine says:

"I offer a confidential, warm and welcoming space, where you can talk freely about your issues without judgement or criticism.

Counselling will give you the opportunity to pause, breathe, reflect, and be heard. An opportunity which can bring about greater understanding and self-awareness, fresh perspective, and a stronger sense of self.

However, I find that words often fail us – we cannot find the words to really express the spectrum of emotions we are feeling. Therefore, occasionally, with your permission and with your comfort level being the most important thing to me, I may introduce a creative way of working.

Working creatively may mean using stones, shells, drawings or small objects to bring a different focus to our work which may enable us to gain alternative valuable insights that support your healing."
