Brazilian vs Manual Lymphatic Drainage – What’s the difference?

While both treatments support your lymphatic system, they each have a different purpose. But, what is the difference!?

Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage uses faster, firmer techniques to reduce bloating, encourage fluid movement and create a more sculpted, contoured appearance.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) uses slow, gentle, rhythmic movements to stimulate lymph flow, reduce swelling, support the immune system and aid recovery following surgery, injury or chronic swelling.

At Rebecca Garcia Levy – Lymphatic Drainage Specialist at the Lansdown Clinic, Bath, every treatment is tailored to your individual needs, whether your goal is body contouring, reducing fluid retention or supporting your overall health and wellbeing.

Introducing Our New Treatment!

We’re excited to announce a brand-new treatment at the Lansdown clinic – Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage Massage!

This treatment has become incredibly popular for its instant body-contouring effect, helping you feel lighter, less bloated, and more sculpted after just one session.

What’s the difference between Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a very gentle, slow and rhythmic treatment designed to encourage the natural movement of lymph fluid. It is commonly used to help reduce swelling, support post-surgical recovery, and promote healthy lymphatic function.

Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage Massage uses firmer, more dynamic techniques to stimulate lymphatic flow while also contouring the body. The treatment combines lymphatic drainage with sculpting movements that can help reduce water retention, improve circulation, leave you feeling less bloated, and create a more defined appearance.

Both treatments aim to support the lymphatic system, but Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage offers a more invigorating massage with an emphasis on body sculpting and immediate visible results.

HOW DOES HEAT AFFECT YOUR LYMPHATIC SYSTEM? ☀️
When the body is exposed to extreme heat, your lymphatic system has to work harder to maintain balance.
Your lymphatic system is responsible for moving excess fluid, waste products, proteins, and immune cells around the body. Unlike your blood circulation, it doesn’t have a pump, it relies on movement, muscle contractions, breathing, hydration, and healthy tissue pressure to keep lymph flowing. What happens in the body during excessive heat?
When your body temperature rises, your nervous system triggers vasodilation — your blood vessels widen to help release heat through the skin.

💧 You sweat more → you lose water and electrolytes
💧 Less fluid availability can make lymph movement less efficient
💧 Tissues can become more congested as fluid balance changes
💧 The body increases inflammation signals as it responds to heat stress
If you become dehydrated, lymph fluid can become more concentrated, making it harder for your body to transport waste and excess fluid efficiently.
You may notice-
✨ Puffy hands or feet
✨ Feeling heavy or sluggish
✨ Increased bloating
✨ Fatigue
✨ Feeling inflamed or “swollen”
How to support your lymph after heat exposure: ❄️ Cool your body gradually
• Put your feet in a cool (not painfully cold) bath
• Take a cool shower
• Use a cool damp towel on your neck, wrists, or behind knees where blood vessels are closer to the surface
💧 Rehydrate properly
Water is essential for lymph flow. Add electrolytes if you’ve been sweating heavily.
🌿 Encourage lymph movement
• Gentle walking
• Deep diaphragmatic breathing
• Stretching and mobility
• Lymphatic drainage massage
✨ Dry body brushing
Gentle brushing towards the lymph nodes can support awareness of lymph pathways and help stimulate the skin and superficial circulation — always use light pressure, as lymph vessels sit close to the surface.
Remember: more heat isn’t always better. The lymphatic system loves balance — hydration, gentle movement, calm breathing, and supporting the body’s natural processes.

Exciting new things are happening !
I have some news and a temporary change to share with you all.
Unfortunately, I am suffering with RSI, and I have decided to take a couple of months off from providing deep tissue massage to recover. I will continue with all other treatments. We have expanded the team to four of us now, which means more availability! We are now open Monday to Sunday ! Some of you have already met Theresa, a highly experienced therapist with a background of luxury spa hotels. Casey will be joining us and we will now be offering sports massage to our treatment list and Christine has over 30 years experience with a background of teaching and owning her own salon in Cornwall. I will continue to carry out all massage treatments of people booked in June / July. After this, all treatments will be moved to the team who I am super confident in leaving you in their hands.
I encourage you to continue maintaining your massage treatments until my return.
Thank you all so much for your continued kindness and support. I am grateful for every single one of you and excited about the expansion of the team and full time hours that we can now offer you.

Thank you for supporting my business, recommending my services, and being part of this journey. Your support never goes unnoticed.
