For Volunteers’ Week, we’re highlighting some of the people who give their time to support patients, their families and staff across the RUH.

Today we’re hearing from Hilary, one of our breastfeeding peer supporters. The team make a huge difference to new mums and parents, providing judgement-free practical tips and emotional support to those who would like or need a little extra support with breastfeeding or breast-milk feeding.

In this video, Hilary shares more about her role, why she volunteers and what it means to her.

Has Hilary inspired you to volunteer with the team? You are eligible if you:
✅ Have breastfed or breastmilk-fed a baby for six months or more (even if this was many years ago)
✅ Can commit around two hours a week to provide in-person support at the RUH

We’ll provide you with a 12-week course that you can complete from the comfort of your own home, and you can start this on a date that suits you.

If you’re interested, we’d love to hear from you: [email protected]

Thank you to Hilary and all our volunteers for the difference you make every day.

We love hearing feedback like this 💙

A big thank you to our Breast Unit and Surgery colleagues for the care and compassion you show every day. Bringing everything together in one visit can make such a difference.

Thank you to all our teams who make this joined-up care possible. 👏

⭐ Please be aware that this video includes discussions of end-of-life care and death. ⭐

For Volunteers’ Week, we’ve been celebrating the incredible people who give their time to support patients, their families and staff across the RUH. 💙

Jen is one of our Compassionate Companions, a role delivered as a partnership between the RUH palliative care team and Dorothy House. Compassionate Companions sit with patients who are nearing the end of their lives, ensuring they are not alone. They offer reassurance to families, whether that’s giving them the opportunity to step away from the bedside for an hour or two, or providing comfort when they are unable to visit.

In this video, Jen shares more about the role and what it means to her to be able to do it.

Thank you to Jen and all our volunteers for the compassion and care that you bring to our hospital every day.

We’re celebrating Dietitians’ Week 🎉 and this year is a particularly special milestone, as the profession marks its 90th anniversary.

Dietitians are a vital part of our hospital teams, working alongside colleagues throughout the RUH to support patients’ health and wellbeing. They:
⭐ Assess individual nutritional needs
⭐ Provide evidence-based nutritional guidance in critical care environments
⭐ Translate nutritional science into practical, achievable everyday guidance and plans

Their work is wide-ranging – from supporting people to manage long-term conditions or maintain a healthy lifestyle, to delivering life-sustaining nutrition in critical care.

Thank you to all of our dieticians for the difference you make to the people we care for every single day.

💜 Service to remember special babies 💜

Open to anyone affected by the loss of a baby at any stage of pregnancy or shortly after birth, this service offers a space to pause, reflect, and remember.

During the service, there will be an opportunity to write your baby’s name on a paper butterfly and light a candle, creating a shared moment of reflection and connection.

Too many appointment reminders? 🔔
We’ve listened and made it simpler.

From 1 June, we’re making a small change to appointment reminders sent through DrDoctor, our text message and email service.

You’ll now receive one reminder, 3 days before your appointment, instead of two reminders at 7 and 2 days.

We’ve made this update in response to feedback that people were receiving too many reminders 😊

There’s no change to booking confirmations or digital letters.

👉 If you can’t attend your appointment, please let us know as early as you can – this helps us offer the slot to another patient.

Did you know that you're three times more likely to quit to***co for good with the help of a stop smoking service? 🚭

However, often quitting isn’t just about willpower and focusing on giving up to***co. If someone’s experiencing other challenges – such as housing worries, poor mental health, or challenges with alcohol and drugs – then a stop smoking journey can be more difficult.

That’s why our Treating To***co Dependency team focuses on providing a holistic, judgement-free service for inpatients at the RUH.

They take the time to get to know each individual, finding out more about their health and wellbeing, what matters to them and what they might be struggling with. This helps them to create a personalised plan to help someone give up to***co for good.

This might include:
⭐️ Giving clear information about ni****ne and to***co use
⭐️ Sharing practical advice about quitting smoking
⭐️ Providing access to ni****ne replacement therapies, such as patches
⭐️ Working with community partners to support wider wellbeing
⭐️ Giving follow-up support to help people stay on track

This personalised approach helps people to stop smoking and improve their overall health and wellbeing – helping to reduce the risk of being readmitted to hospital.

This service is currently available to RUH inpatients – if you're interested, please speak to your care team during your hospital stay.

If you’re an outpatient or a member of our local community, you can access support via the Community Wellbeing Hub. Pop into our Atrium (10am – 3pm, Monday – Friday), or phone 0300 247 0050 / 0333 005 0095 (9am – 5pm, Monday – Friday).

If you’re pregnant, specialist support is available – please speak to your midwife for more information.

This World No To***co Day, if you’re thinking about quitting, reaching out for support could make all the difference.

If a friend or family member is getting ready to be discharged from hospital, there are simple, practical ways you can help get them back to the comfort of their own home as soon as possible. 🏠

✅ Ensure their home is comfortable and tidy ready for when they return. Remove trip hazards, clean any dirty dishes and throw away mouldy food.
✅ Pick up any prescriptions and make sure they have healthy food and drinks ready.
✅ Check they have essentials like keys and a working phone so they can get follow-up care or ask for help if needed.
✅ Arrange transport home from hospital and make sure they have weather-appropriate clothes and shoes for the journey.
✅ Know who to contact for help at home. In BANES this includes the Community Wellbeing Hub who can connect you with local organisations who can provide support.

We know people prefer the comfort of their own home, and recover faster there following a stay in hospital. Help us ensure a smooth and safe return home for our patients. 💙
