COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS – IT’S ABOUT FINDING WHAT’S OUT THERE
Lesley has been busy meeting our customers one-to-one, finding out what they enjoy, what they miss and what might help them get out and feel more connected to their local community.
And the connections keep growing.
Lesley has now officially become a volunteer with Re-engage, helping us build even more opportunities for people to meet others and get involved.
One event she’s discovered and is promoting is Char Fest 2026 in Basildon.
Saturday 22nd August, 12pm–8pm at Basildon Post Office Sports & Social Club.
It’s FREE to attend, with live music, stalls, activities, games, dancers, DJ lessons, inflatables and plenty more.
Not every activity will be right for every person. That’s exactly why Lesley is meeting people individually.
Community connection isn't about handing someone a leaflet.
It's about finding the right opportunity for the right person β€” and sometimes helping them overcome whatever is stopping them getting there.
That’s what we want this role to become.

The heat may not be making the headlines today... but the risks haven't gone away.

This summer has already seen a significant rise in heat-related deaths across England and Wales. Recent estimates suggest that more than 2,700 people died during the May and June heatwaves alone, with older people and those living with long-term health conditions most at risk.

At SESNHA, we know that staying safe in hot weather isn't just about drinking more water.

Please continue to check in on older relatives, neighbours and friends.

A few simple actions can make a real difference:
β€’ Encourage regular drinks, even if someone doesn't feel thirsty.
β€’ Keep curtains closed during the hottest part of the day.
β€’ Open windows when it's cooler in the evening.
β€’ Avoid strenuous activity during the afternoon heat.
β€’ Look out for signs that someone isn't coping, such as confusion, dizziness, headaches or unusual tiredness.
β€’ Make sure prescribed medication is taken as advised and seek medical advice if you're concerned.

Sometimes the most important thing you can do is simply knock on someone's door or pick up the phone.

A five-minute conversation could save a life.

At SESNHA, we're committed to helping people stay safe, independent and connected all year round.

Where has Lesley been? Everywhere!

Over the next few weeks, our Community Connections Manager, Lesley, will be visiting many of our existing SESNHA customers for a one-to-one chat.

The aim is simple: to make sure everyone who wants to get out more, meet new people or reconnect with their community has the opportunity to do so.

Every person is different. For some, it's finding a local coffee morning or activity group. For others, it might be volunteering, making new friends, enjoying a hobby again or simply having the confidence to get back out into the community.

Together, Lesley and our customers look at what matters most to them and identify any barriers that might be getting in the way. Whether that's transport, confidence, mobility, finding the right group or just knowing where to start, we'll work together to find practical solutions.

We're delighted to say that after just the first week of this pilot, the feedback has been incredibly positive. Customers are already discovering opportunities they didn't know existed and, more importantly, feeling excited about getting involved again.

At SESNHA, care isn't just about helping people stay safe at home. It's about helping people live the life they want to live.

We can't wait to share some of the fantastic community groups, activities and success stories that Lesley discovers over the coming weeks.

Because everyone deserves to feel connected.

On 22nd July we are supporting World Fragile X Day.

Before this month, I'll be honest, Fragile X Syndrome wasn't something I knew a great deal about. Awareness days are important because they give all of us an opportunity to stop, learn and understand a little more about the world through somebody else's eyes.

Fragile X Syndrome is the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability and can affect communication, learning, behaviour, anxiety and sensory processing. No two people are the same and many individuals with Fragile X have incredible strengths alongside the challenges they may face.

At SESNHA we spend a lot of time talking about connection. We know that people don't just need care and support, they need understanding, opportunities and communities that make space for everyone.

Sometimes inclusion isn't about doing something extraordinary. It's about speaking a little slower, giving somebody a little more time, reducing the noise around them or simply making sure they feel welcomed and valued.

That's what awareness means to us.

Today we're celebrating the individuals living with Fragile X, their families, carers and the organisations working so hard to improve lives and increase understanding.

Because everybody deserves to feel connected, included and seen.

The Communities We Support Aren't Perfect. That's Why We Care.

Today SESNHA is proud to support National DRESS Syndrome Awareness Day.

Awareness days matter because they give a voice to people and communities that can sometimes go unseen or unheard.

As an organisation, this is something we intend to do much more of.

Over the coming months we'll be supporting awareness days and campaigns that shine a light on difficult conversations. Conversations around addiction, drugs and alcohol, loneliness, social isolation, dementia, hidden disabilities, mental health, recovery and many other challenges affecting the communities we proudly serve.

We are not frightened of these conversations and we don't believe they should be hidden away.

Drug addiction exists in our communities. Alcohol addiction exists in our communities. Families are being affected every single day and many people are suffering in silence. They deserve support, compassion and understanding just as much as anyone else.

Nobody ever wakes up one morning and decides they want to become addicted to drugs or alcohol. Behind every addiction is a person. Behind every person is a story. Behind every story is a family that cares.

At SESNHA we believe great care goes far beyond helping somebody to wash, dress or prepare a meal. Sometimes care starts with listening. Sometimes it starts with kindness. Sometimes it starts with difficult conversations that nobody else wants to have.

We will continue to use our voice to support those conversations.

Because nobody should ever feel forgotten by the community they belong to.

We feel our role as a south Essex care provider should be to help everyone knows about all about them. Today was Kinder Essex's day for Lesley to drop in on, as usual Lesley was filled with stories and connections made today that we know will help our customers and future customers.
