Manton Heights ABI Unit is a bespoke and modern neurorehabilitation service in Bedford. We use and comply to the BSRM ABI rehabilitation standards which means we truly focus on the outcomes our service users wish to achieve. This leads to high motivation in the goal led therapy programmes with the outcomes regularly reported. Our team have a range of rehabilitation skills including physical, cognitive and neuro-behavioural specialism. Our facilities are purpose built, modern, light and spacious and ideally situated in the community. We are close to a large supermarket, bus routes into the town centre and the local community facilities including a Gym and college to help us work on the skills people need to relearn for independence

Meet Holly Pickering, Our Therapy Assistant.

“Hi, my name is Holly, and I’m the Therapy Assistant at Manton Heights ABI Unit, where I’m part of the multidisciplinary team supporting patients through their rehabilitation.
One of the things I enjoy most about my role is that no two days are the same. I’m involved in lots of different areas of rehabilitation, from leading and assisting with exercise groups and completing one-to-one therapy and speech sessions, to working alongside the wider multidisciplinary team.

A big part of my role is also getting to know our patients and building positive relationships with them. I really enjoy the social side of the job — having a chat, sharing a laugh, encouraging someone through a difficult session, or simply being there to support them throughout their day. For me, one of the most rewarding parts of rehabilitation is seeing progress, no matter how big or small. A goal that may seem simple to someone else can be a huge achievement for a patient, and being able to encourage them, celebrate those milestones and see their confidence grow is something I really value.

I feel very fortunate to work alongside such a supportive and knowledgeable team, where everyone brings something different to a patient’s rehabilitation. Being able to learn from the different professionals around me while contributing to the day-to-day care and rehabilitation of our patients is something I really enjoy.

Most importantly, I’m proud to be part of a team that puts the person at the centre of their rehabilitation and recognises that every achievement, big or small, matters.”

Following a stroke that caused significant right-sided weakness, this patient initially relied on a Sara Stedy for transfers. She is now taking supported steps with a gutter frame—an incredible, life-changing progression towards greater strength, confidence and independence.

A powerful example of what determination and specialist neurorehabilitation can achieve. 💙

Introducing the faces behind the ABI!

Meet Kelly Skevington, Our Assistant Psychologist.

" My name is Kelly and I am the Assistant Psychologist working at Manton Heights ABI unit as part of the psychology team that support our patients throughout their admission.

Throughout my career, I have worked in a variety of settings, including the police and probation service as well as supporting adults and children with substance misuse. Eight years ago, I joined Manton Heights as a carer, and since then I gained the opportunity to use my Master's degree in Psychology to support our patients in a different way; by combining my academic knowledge with my practical experience to help improve their care, and support their recovery after their injury.

My role within the unit is to work with patients who are recovering from a brain and/or spinal cord injury to understand and manage changes in their thinking, emotions, and behaviour, and to support them and their families with the impact of that injury.

Supervised by our Consultant Clinical Psychologist, I complete neuropsychometric assessments, formulate and deliver therapy sessions, and work with the wider multidisciplinary team to support ongoing rehabilitation plans. I continuously monitor mood, and support patients that are showing signs of low mood, anxiety and trauma. I also run games and wellbeing groups, as well as support patients in practicing mindfulness sessions.

We provide care using a trauma-informed and compassionate approach, recognising how past experiences joined with the impact of an injury can affect recovery. We recognise that every patient is different, and work alongside them to achieve goals that are meaningful and important to them.

It’s a pleasure to work in a small but mighty unit, delivering person-centred care to all that we meet. "

🎲 Games Group at Manton Heights ABI Unit 🎯

Today, some of our patients took part in a fun and interactive Games Group as part of their rehabilitation programme.

The session was designed to encourage upper and lower body movement, while also working on coordination, balance, reaching, strength and mobility. Activities like these can also support concentration, problem-solving, communication and social interaction – all while making therapy enjoyable and engaging.

It was great to see everyone getting involved, encouraging one another and having some fun along the way! 👏😊

This week, we’re highlighting one of the supportive therapies used within our rehabilitation programme – compression boots.

The photo below shows one of our patients using compression boots following a physiotherapy session.

Compression boots gently inflate and deflate around the legs to encourage healthy blood flow and circulation, while helping to reduce swelling. For some individuals, they can also help improve comfort and support recovery following therapy sessions.

When clinically appropriate, compression boots are used alongside physiotherapy and other rehabilitation interventions as part of a personalised rehabilitation programme. As with all aspects of rehabilitation, their use is tailored to each person’s individual needs and goals, forming part of a wider approach to supporting recovery.

Every intervention, no matter how small, can play an important role in helping our patients work towards their rehabilitation goals.

Meet Nontie Sibanda, Our Occupational Therapist

"My name is Nontie (Pronounced ‘non-tea’), and I am an HCPC registered Specialist Occupational Therapist with a passion for helping individuals regain independence and improve their quality of life. I believe that successful rehabilitation is about more than restoring function. It's about enabling people to return to the activities, roles and routines that matter most to them.

Throughout my career, I have worked across acute NHS hospitals in complex Medicine, Neurology, Frailty, and Orthopaedics. I have also worked within community services, which included General rehabilitation, Neurorehabilitation, Rapid assessment & Response, Palliative care, Frailty and complex discharge planning.

My role includes cognitive and functional assessments, upper limb rehabilitation, fatigue management, equipment provision, environmental adaptations and complex discharge planning. I enjoy working collaboratively with patients, families and the multidisciplinary team to develop meaningful, goal-focused rehabilitation programmes that achieve lasting outcomes.

Since joining Manton Heights, I have had the privilege of developing and leading the OT service within our unit and helping shape a service that delivers high-quality, person-centred rehabilitation.

Whether I'm working directly with patients, supporting families or developing services behind the scenes, my aim is always the same; To empower people to live as independently and meaningfully as possible."

Sometimes the biggest milestones aren't measured in steps. They're measured in rediscovering the things that make us who we are.

Following Miller Fisher syndrome, this patient experienced significant upper limb ataxia, making even simple tasks extremely challenging. Writing and drawing activities she had always loved became impossible due to the severity of the tremor and impaired coordination.

The first few images show one of her early attempts at tracing letters. Through daily upper limb rehabilitation, task specific practice, and meaningful occupational therapy, her coordination, control, and confidence steadily improved.

The last image tells an incredible story of recovery. She progressed from struggling to trace letters to creating this beautiful painting, allowing her to reconnect with an occupation that brings her purpose and joy.

Recovery is about so much more than improving movement. It's about helping people regain their independence, confidence, and the ability to participate in the activities that matter most to them.
