Sometimes the wake-up call is not your own crisis. It is watching someone else's.

Ritu told me about friends in their community who separated. A couple with small children, a couple they had a lot in common with. Close enough that the resemblance was impossible to ignore.

Nothing dramatic had happened to her relationship - yet. But seeing how far things can drift was enough to make her decide she did not want to find out.

How often have you found yourself thinking 'OMG we've gone and done it again, just like last week and the week before'?

There's a name for this. It's called 'the-more-the-more'. The more one person pursues, criticises or withdraws, the more the other responds with their own protective reaction. Before long, both people are triggering exactly the behaviour they least want from each other.

Most of us treat conflict as evidence that something has gone wrong.

Ritu described her relationship like a video game. Every level has its own monster, and beating it is what unlocks the next stage. Not a sign of failure. An invitation to go deeper together.

I loved that. It reframes the hard bit as the point, rather than the problem.

Are you setting your partner up to fail?

When we have been hurt in the past, whether by a parent, a former partner or our current one, we often start to expect more of the same. The brain is a kind of prediction machine, and because it has a negativity bias, it tends to notice the signs that confirm what we already fear.

In relationships, this can create a self-fulfilling prophecy. We expect disappointment, criticism or distance, and then we react to that expectation rather than to what is actually happening. Our partner responds to our tone, our defensiveness or our withdrawal, and their reaction then feels like proof that we were right all along.

It is a loop that is very hard to see while you are standing inside it.

It’s funny how it works. You spend 20 or 30 years thinking you "got through" boarding school just fine. Then, in your 40s or 50s, the patterns start to show up.

Maybe it’s a sudden sense of loneliness, a struggle to stay present in your marriage, or a feeling of "is this it?"

If you’re starting to notice the legacy of those school years, please know: you aren't broken. You just learned to survive a situation a child wasn't meant to handle alone.

How many times have you said that to yourself? You look at your education, the opportunities you had, and the fact that you "got on with it," and you feel like you don't have the right to struggle.

But your nervous system doesn’t care about the school’s reputation or the quality of the playing fields. It only knows that you were small, and you were away from the people who loved you.

We often carry a hidden guilt for feeling the way we do. We call it "privilege," but the heart doesn't experience "privileged" abandonment...it just experiences abandonment.

If you feel like you’re "fine" but somehow struggling to truly connect, or if you feel a strange sense of loneliness in a room full of people, please know: your feelings are valid. You don't need to have had a "terrible" time to deserve a space where you can heal.

The Tuck Shop is a judgment-free zone. No one is comparing scars. We’re just here to help each other find the way back to ourselves.

When I envisioned The Tuck Shop, I didn't want it to be just another course. I wanted it to be a living, breathing support system for ex-boarders and their families.

This is a place for people who want to heal, but also people who want to help shape how the community evolves. Your voice, your story and your presence are what make this special.

Most people see the version of you that’s got it all figured out. The one who is reliable, high-achieving, and never cracks under pressure. We learned that "survival personality" early, didn't we? As soon as we started boarding school.

But inside, does it ever feel like there’s a wall between you and the people you love most? Like you’re watching life through a pane of glass?

I’ve been there. That’s why I started The Tuck Shop back in January - a community for ex-boarders and their partners. It’s not a classroom or a clinic - it’s a community for those of us who are tired of just "surviving" and are ready to actually feel at home in our own lives.

We’re re-opening to new members on April 28th.

Remember the original Tuck Shop? For some of us it was the one place at school that felt like a treat, a bit of comfort, or a literal taste of home.

As adults, we still need that "tuck." Not the sweets or the cake, but the emotional nourishment of being around people who get it without us having to explain the boarding school shorthand.

Our community, The Tuck Shop, is a place to drop the armour, share a story and find the tools to move on from those old wounds of early separation. It’s a space for sharing and warmth, and it’s also a space for where healing can happen.
