Exam anxiety doesn’t always show up in obvious ways.

Sometimes it looks like avoiding revision, struggling to focus, emotional shutdowns, irritability, exhaustion or physical symptoms like headaches and stomach aches.

A lot of teenagers aren’t being “difficult” during exam season - they’re overwhelmed.

Understanding what anxiety can actually look like is often the first step in supporting them properly.

Teen behaviour is rarely just about “bad attitude.”

Sometimes anger is overwhelm. Sometimes silence is anxiety. Sometimes withdrawal is emotional exhaustion.

A lot of teenagers struggle to explain what they’re feeling - so their emotions come out through behaviour instead.

Looking beneath the behaviour with curiosity rather than immediate punishment can completely change the conversation.

Anxious teenagers don’t need to be told to “just calm down.”

Most already feel overwhelmed, frustrated or guilty for struggling in the first place.

What helps more is feeling emotionally safe, supported and understood.

Small shifts in language can make a huge difference to how teenagers process difficult emotions.

Teenagers don’t always have the words to explain what’s going on internally.

What looks like attitude, silence, anger or distance is often stress, overwhelm, anxiety or emotional shutdown underneath.

A lot of teens aren’t trying to push parents away - they’re struggling to regulate emotions they don’t fully understand yet.

Feeling emotionally safe, listened to and supported can make a huge difference during the teenage years.

Exam stress doesn’t always look like constant revision.

Sometimes it looks like shutting down, snapping over small things, struggling to focus, avoiding work completely or feeling emotionally exhausted all the time.

A lot of teenagers aren’t “lazy” during exam season -they’re overwhelmed.

When stress becomes chronic without enough emotional recovery, burnout can happen quickly.
Teens need support, rest, reassurance and emotional safety just as much as they need revision plans.

Teenagers often push people away when they’re struggling emotionally.

Not because they don’t need support - but because they don’t know how to ask for it safely.

Sometimes the most powerful thing a parent can do is stay calm, present and emotionally available… even when their teen acts like they don’t want them there.

Teenagers aren’t always trying to be “difficult.”

Sometimes they’re overwhelmed, emotionally flooded, exhausted, anxious or struggling to process what they’re feeling and it comes out as anger, shutting down, attitude or withdrawal.

Punishment may stop the behaviour temporarily, but it rarely teaches emotional regulation long term.

What helps more is connection, calm boundaries, emotional safety and helping teens understand what’s happening inside themselves.

Regulation is a skill - not something teenagers magically know how to do on their own.
