Bedford Hospital This is the official page for Bedford Hospital, part of Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Frequently Asked Questions

1.

This is the official page for Bedford Hospital. You can also visit our website at www.bedfordshirehospitals.nhs.uk or follow our account on Twitter

Please note that this site is not monitored 24 hours a day and that cannot be used to give medical advice. In a medical emergency you should dial 999 and for non-urgent medical advice you should dial 111. How is the site man

aged? This site does not have a dedicated team to service the enquiries made through it. The staff who post the responses are doing so in addition to their main roles.

2. What can I post on the site? Please remember that Facebook is a public forum and is not the appropriate place for us to discuss specific cases or complaints. In such cases we may message you directly to inform you on how best to resolve your issue. Whilst we encourage healthy debate and appreciate that our users will have opinions on current events, we ask everyone to remember that this site has a large and diverse user base, so please be respectful when making your comments. Our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) is our dedicated department that deals with these enquiries and can be contacted via email at [email protected] or by phone on 01234 795814.

3. What is your deletion policy? Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will remove any comments that are considered to be:

- Offensive
- Abusive
- Threatening
- Deliberately insensitive or inflammatory
- Contain links

We may remove posts that have no connection to the Trust as this site is for local healthcare information. It is inappropriate for us to comment on or host debates about actions being undertaken by other Trusts, other professional bodies or other countries. Where possible we will try to inform a user that their post has been deleted and offer an explanation as to why. However, as this site is not run by a dedicated team, we may not always be able to do this.

4. Why do you mention the names of some patients? Patients that we name in our articles and posts have agreed and signed to do so. Each patient fills out a consent form which must be signed by them and authorised by a responsible clinician if appropriate.

5. How can I contact you if I don’t want to post my questions on here? You can contact the communications team via email at [email protected]. Again please note that emails are not monitored 24 hours a day cannot be used to give medical advice. Alternatively, you can contact our PALS team (patient advice and liaison service) via email at [email protected].

For , we would like to remind everyone of our partnership with NHS Blood and Transplant Therapeutic Apheresis Services (TAS) team to offer a red cell exchange service, operating out of the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital Day Treatment Unit (DTU).

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a lifelong inherited condition affecting red blood cells, causing them to obstruct blood vessels, leading to episodes of severe pain (crises), chronic anaemia, increased susceptibility to infection, and progressive multi-organ complications.

The red cell exchange service at the DTU helps people experiencing crises, and having the service within Bedfordshire saves hours of travel for those suffering.

"It's Men's Health Week!

Simon (He/They) supports patients within his role of Clinical Navigator at Bedford Hospital.

“I make a real effort to utilise my time after work, and take some time away from technology too. This helps ensure that I’m not pouring from an empty jug when I’m working to support our patients at the Trust.

“I like to get out into nature and enjoy walking and cycling; we’re lucky to have some beautiful places within Bedfordshire. I spend time with friends and family, enjoy reading, and cooking! I find this not only helps cut out a lot of processed foods but can be relaxing in its own way.

“This , I want to share that the best way to look after yourself is to be kind. Kind to your body, kind to your mind and kind to others. I think ‘being a man’ is something we are told is super important but really we’re all just people trying our best. So do happy, healthy things that you love and don’t be afraid to ask for a hand if you need it.”

Elisha works as an Activity Co-ordinator at Bedford Hospital.

“In my role, I like to interact with the patient, talk to them and see how they are. I organise activities, such as coffee mornings, along with the other activity co-ordinators. I also ask colleagues if they have heard any patients admitting that they are feeling down and then I will go and interact with them on a one-to-one basis.

“Other activities I do on the ward include pamper sessions, where I take the patients to the shower room and wash their hair, or I give them a hand pampering session by soaking their hands in water, cleaning and filing their nails and then applying cream and massaging their hands.”

Last week we marked and our Tissue Viability team hosted stalls at Bedford and the L&D.

Tissue Viability Nurse Reshmi shares the importance of lower limb and wound care, an under-recognised area with a profound impact on quality of life.

“This campaign resonates deeply with my daily practice, where I see first-hand the physical, emotional, and social consequences of delayed diagnosis and inconsistent management of leg and foot conditions.

“Early assessment, holistic care, and education help prevent complications such as ulcers, infections, and avoidable amputations. Legs Matter Week empowers patients to recognise symptoms earlier and seek timely help.”

Max works as a Porter at Bedford Hospital.

“My Dad worked at the Trust and suggested I apply for the role. I look forward to working with wonderful people everyday and talking to patients. I take pride in knowing I have made a difference.

"The Estates and Facilities staff are a fundamental part of the hospital operation, so that’s why it’s so important to celebrate and recognise them.”
