🧠 THE MENTAL GAME OF FITNESS

We talk a lot about training the body.

But what about training the mind?

Whether your goal is to get stronger, improve your fitness, lose body fat, feel healthier or simply become more consistent, your mindset can have a huge influence on whether you actually get there.

Here are 5 ways to improve your mental game 👇

1️⃣ Stop relying on motivation

Motivation comes and goes.

Instead, build routines that make exercise part of your normal week. You don't need to *feel like* training every time — you just need to keep showing up.

2️⃣ Set goals you can actually control

Instead of:

❌ “I want to lose 10kg.”

Try:

✅ “I'll train 3 times this week.”

✅ “I'll walk for 30 minutes on my rest days.”

✅ “I'll increase my squat by 5kg over the next 8 weeks.”

Specific goals give you something concrete to work towards and measure.

3️⃣ Don't underestimate small wins

Your brain needs evidence that you're making progress.

Celebrate the extra rep.

The heavier weight.

The session you nearly skipped but did anyway.

The improved energy.

Progress isn't always visible in the mirror.

4️⃣ Change the way you talk to yourself

“I’m so unfit.”

“I’m terrible at this.”

“I’ll never be able to do that.”

Your internal dialogue matters.

Try:

💭 “I'm getting stronger.”

💭 “I'm learning.”

💭 “I don't have to be perfect — I just need to be consistent.”

You aren't trying to convince yourself you're already where you want to be. You're reminding yourself that you are capable of getting there.

5️⃣ Know your WHY

If your only goal is how you look, motivation can disappear quickly.

Ask yourself:

Why do I actually want to be healthier?

More energy?

Better confidence?

To feel stronger?

To keep up with your children?

To feel better in yourself?

A goal that means something to you is much easier to stick with.REMEMBER:

You don't need the perfect programme.

You don't need perfect motivation.

And you certainly don't need to be perfect.

You need a goal, a plan and the mindset to keep going when the initial motivation wears off.**

Your body follows what your mind repeatedly chooses.

🧠 Train the mind. Train the body. Build the lifestyle

🦶 Chronic Ankle Instability: More Than Just a Repeated Sprain

Up to 40% of people who sustain a lateral ankle sprain** go on to develop chronic ankle instability (CAI), characterised by recurrent sprains, episodes of the ankle "giving way," and persistent feelings of instability.

Research shows that CAI isn't simply a ligament problem. It is associated with:
• Reduced proprioception (joint position sense).
• Impaired neuromuscular control and balance.
• Deficits in strength, particularly around the ankle and hip.
• Altered movement mechanics during running, landing and change-of-direction tasks.

What does this mean for training?

Athletes with chronic ankle instability often demonstrate reduced single-leg stability, delayed muscle activation, and compensatory movement patterns. Over time, these adaptations may reduce performance efficiency and increase the load placed on other joints, potentially contributing to injuries elsewhere in the kinetic chain.

The encouraging news is that rehabilitation works.

Evidence consistently supports exercise-based rehabilitation incorporating:
✅ Progressive strengthening.
✅ Balance and proprioceptive training.
✅ Plyometrics and sport-specific loading.
✅ Dynamic movement retraining.

While bracing or taping can reduce the risk of recurrent sprains during higher-risk activities, they should complement—not replace—a comprehensive rehabilitation programme.

If you've had multiple ankle sprains or your ankle still feels unstable months after your injury, it may be time to move beyond simply "resting it" and address the underlying impairments.

The evidence is clear: restoring function—not just reducing pain—is key to reducing recurrence and optimising performance.

Work, training, recovery, repeat.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is treating every day like it should be your hardest session. The reality? Progress comes from balancing stress and recovery, not constantly pushing harder.

Think of your week like a bank account:

• Work creates physical and mental fatigue.
• Training adds another withdrawal.
• Sleep, nutrition, hydration, and recovery are your deposits.

If you're working long hours, sleeping poorly, or feeling run down, pushing through another maximal session isn't always the answer. Sometimes the smartest athletes are the ones who know when to pull back.

A simple framework:

🏋️ 2-4 hard training sessions per week
🚶 2-3 lighter days focused on movement, mobility, or walking
😴 At least 1 true recovery day

Push when:
✅ Energy is good
✅ Sleep is consistent
✅ Motivation is high
✅ Recovery markers are positive

Ease off when:
⚠️ Performance is dropping
⚠️ You're carrying excessive soreness
⚠️ Sleep quality is poor
⚠️ Stress levels are elevated

Remember, optimum health and optimum fitness aren't always the same thing. Chasing peak performance year-round often comes at the expense of recovery, relationships, and overall wellbeing.

The goal isn't to train as hard as possible.

The goal is to train as hard as necessary while staying healthy enough to do it consistently for years.

Consistency beats intensity every time.

INSOLES & TRAINING SURFACES 👣🏃
Different surfaces place different demands on your feet, joints, muscles, and tendons. The right insole isn't just about comfort—it can help manage load, improve stability, and reduce injury risk.

🛣️ Concrete & Asphalt
High-impact surfaces increase stress on bones and joints.
**Insole focus:** Shock absorption, heel cushioning, pressure redistribution, and arch support.

🌱 Grass Fields
Softer underfoot but often less predictable.
**Insole focus:** Stability and arch support to help control excessive foot movement.

🏃 Synthetic Tracks
Designed for energy return and repetitive running.
**Insole focus:** Lightweight support and energy-return materials that don't interfere with natural movement.

🌲 Trails & Uneven Terrain
Variable surfaces demand greater balance and foot control.
**Insole focus:** Stability, deep heel cups, and enhanced proprioceptive feedback.

⚽ Artificial Turf
Higher traction can increase rotational forces through the foot and lower limb.
**Insole focus:** Forefoot cushioning, pressure redistribution, and stability support.

How Insoles May Help

Research suggests foot orthoses can:
✅ Reduce peak plantar pressures
✅ Improve force distribution
✅ Modify lower-limb biomechanics
✅ Reduce stress on vulnerable tissues
✅ Improve comfort during training
✅ Lower the risk of some overuse injuries and stress fractures

Important Reminder
Insoles are only one part of the injury-prevention picture.

The strongest evidence still supports:
✔ Progressive training loads
✔ Appropriate footwear
✔ Strength and conditioning
✔ Recovery and mobility work
✔ Individualised orthotic intervention when required

Key Takeaway
There is no single "best" insole.
The most effective insole is the one that matches:
👣 Your foot mechanics
🏃 Your sport and training volume
🌍 The surface you train on most often

Different grounds. Different demands. Better support.

📚 Evidence based on research published in *British Journal of Sports Medicine*, *Sports Medicine Open*, *Gait & Posture*, and *Journal of Foot & Ankle Research*.
