Endocrine disruptors.
Have you heard of them?
Do you know where to find them?
Are you aware of the potential damage they can do over years of continuous exposure?
If you answered no to any of these questions, then you need to keep reading….
Most of us have been using make up, skincare, perfume, shower gel, nail products etc since we were teens.
When you think about it, that’s 10 - 40+ years of using these products every single day.
So what’s the big deal?
Some chemicals found in our cosmetics and make up are known endocrine disruptors - basically chemicals that can interfere with the way our hormones work.
And why does this matter?
Our hormones are responsible for SO much, our monthly cycle, fertility, mood, sleep, metabolism and how we experience perimenopause / menopause.
Endocrine disruptors can mimic our natural hormones, block them or interfere with normal hormone signalling, basically disrupting the delicate hormonal balance our body needs to function properly.
And this post is not to pick on one brand or product.
It’s the cumulative exposure I want you to think about.
Make up, skincare, perfume, deodorant, shampoo, body wash, hair products….
Day after day. Year after year.
We’re very conscious of what we eat, but how often do we think about what we’re putting on our skin?
Our skin is the body’s largest organ and it can absorb substances we put on it.
So what should we be looking out for?
🔴 Phthalates
🔴 Parabens
🔴 PFAS
🔴 Triclosan
🔴 Fragrance/Parfum
And it’s not just cosmetics. Endocrine disruptors can also be found in plastics, food packaging, household products and some cookware. But that’s a whole other post! 🙈
So if you struggle with painful or irregular periods, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, PCOS, fertility issues or perimenopause symptoms, I think it’s worth becoming more aware of what you’re putting on / in / around your body every day.
I’m not saying go and throw out your whole make up bag & bathroom cabinet!! 🙈
This is simply about awareness & education.
Knowing what to look out for and maybe making some simple swaps next time you shop… if you want to! ❤️
