Dear Political Leaders in NI,
I am writing to urge all political parties and elected representatives in Northern Ireland to issue a joint cross-party statement reminding the public that the vast majority of immigrants living in Northern Ireland are here legally and make valuable contributions to our society every day.
Many immigrants work in our health and social care services, including hospitals, GP practices and care homes. Others are employed in hospitality, retail, manufacturing, education, transport and numerous other sectors that are essential to the functioning of our economy and communities. They pay taxes, support local businesses, raise families and contribute positively to life in Northern Ireland.
In light of recent events, it is vital that a clear distinction is made between individuals who commit criminal acts and the overwhelming majority of immigrants who have done nothing wrong. The abhorrent attack that has caused such concern and outrage cannot and should not be used to condemn an entire community of people.
It is equally important to recognise that serious crimes are, unfortunately, sometimes committed by people born and raised in Northern Ireland. When this occurs, we rightly hold the individuals responsible to account rather than attributing blame to all people from the same background. The same principle must apply here.
The violence witnessed last night has understandably created fear and anxiety among many people who have come to Northern Ireland to work, study and build a life. Many will now be questioning their safety and whether they are truly welcome in the communities they serve.
A united message from all political leaders would help reassure those affected, reduce tensions, and reinforce the principle that criminal behaviour should be condemned without fostering hostility towards entire groups of people. Such a statement would demonstrate collective leadership and a commitment to protecting community relations at a particularly sensitive time.
I would therefore respectfully ask that all parties work together to issue a clear, public, cross-party message affirming that legal immigrants are valued members of our society, condemning all forms of violence and intimidation, and encouraging respect, understanding and community cohesion across Northern Ireland.
Thank you for your consideration.
