“It’s just calories in vs calories out.”

If only it were that simple.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism as a teenager, and it gave me an early understanding of just how complex weight, metabolism and health can be. It sparked a real curiosity in me and a determination to look beyond the myths and oversimplified messages we so often hear.

Yes, energy balance is part of the picture. But it’s only one small piece of a far more complex system.

Biology, hormones, genetics, medication, sleep, stress, mental health and the wider food environment all influence how our bodies regulate weight and how we respond to changes in food and activity.

We also now understand that the body actively adapts to weight loss by increasing appetite and reducing energy expenditure, which is one of the reasons long-term weight management can be so challenging.

When we reduce weight to a simple equation, we risk overlooking the science and more importantly, the person behind the weight.

We also risk reinforcing stigma, suggesting that outcomes are purely about discipline or willpower, when the evidence clearly shows that this is not the case.

There is always more going on than willpower.

And understanding that is where real, sustainable support begins.

Spending nearly two decades living and working in the Middle East completely changed how I see food and health.

I worked within a very different food culture, healthcare environment and lifestyle context; where I saw a wide range of approaches to eating, weight management and wellbeing, alongside very different health challenges shaped by environment, affluence, tradition and rapid lifestyle change.

It gave me a much deeper understanding that weight is never just about individual choices in isolation. It is shaped by genetics, biology, culture, environment, access, stress, sleep, income, and the systems around us.

Some approaches I saw worked well. Others highlighted just how complex and sensitive this area really is.

But what it taught me most is this:

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to weight or health.

And when we try to treat it as if there is, we often miss the person behind the problem.

Context, culture and real life don’t just matter... they are central to how we support people properly.

That understanding continues to shape everything I do in my clinic today.

My journey into dietetics wasn’t just professional, it was personal.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism as a teenager, and that gave me an early understanding of just how complex weight, metabolism and health can be. It sparked a curiosity in me and that curiosity grew into a career spanning 25 years in dietetics, obesity care and real-world behaviour change.

I spent nearly two decades living and working in the Middle East, where I saw a very different approach to obesity. It was recognised, spoken about openly, and more importantly treated as a medical condition. People came forward for help, engaged in care and expected support.

Coming back home to Northern Ireland was a stark contrast.

There are no specialist services and more worryingly, people who need support the most, hiding away. Not because they didn’t care, but because of years of shame, stigma and blame.

That contrast has stayed with me.

Because what it reinforced is this: obesity is not a personal failing. People don’t need judgement. They need evidence-based, compassionate, structured support that reflects real life and access to a system without fear of judegement.

I don't just want to understand the science, I want to use it to change how we support people.

That’s still what drives me every day in my clinic.

Not all nutrition advice is created equal.

In a world full of quick fixes, trends and “before and after” promises on social media, it can be hard to know who to trust.

The title “dietitian” is protected by law, which means we are university-trained, regulated healthcare professionals and accountable to strict ethical and clinical standards.

We don’t just share opinions, we use evidence-based practice, clinical guidelines and real-world experience to support safe and effective care.

That matters, especially when it comes to weight management, obesity and long-term health, areas where misinformation can do real harm.

If you’re looking for support with your weight or health, always check the credentials behind the advice you’re following.

Because trust isn’t optional in healthcare, it’s essential.

People of East Belfast and beyond.

If you’re struggling with your weight, your health or just feel stuck and unsure where to start, support is now available locally.

I work with people every day who feel overwhelmed, frustrated or confused by conflicting advice online, past dieting experiences or simply not knowing what actually works anymore.

Weight management is not just about willpower. It’s influenced by biology, environment, stress, medications, genetics, and the world we live in. When we understand that, we can start to approach things very differently and more effectively.

In my clinic, I provide specialist dietetic support for people who want a realistic, evidence, based approach to improving their health and wellbeing. No extremes. No blame. No quick fixes.

My approach is simple:
✔ Evidence,based, clinically informed care
✔ Personalised support based on your life and health
✔ Realistic strategies that actually fit into everyday life
✔ A completely non- judgemental space

This is about more than weight loss. It’s about helping people improve energy, confidence, health and quality of life in a sustainable way.

If you’ve felt stuck for a long time, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

Let’s move you from stuck to sorted.

Behind the clinic door, I’m not just a dietitian.

I’m a busy mum of 3, a dog mum to Lulu, and a carer for my elderly parents. So I understand first, hand how full, messy and demanding real life can be.

I also spent nearly two decades living and working in the Middle East, where I saw how differently weight, food culture and health are approached. That experience shaped me deeply and is part of why I do what I do now, because I believe we need a more compassionate, realistic way of supporting people here.

I love my job and my clients, and I genuinely believe I learn as much from them as they do from me. Every story reminds me that weight and health are never just about food , they’re about biology, environment, stress, culture and lived experience.

I’m outdoors whenever I can be, I definitely eat chocolate, and I care deeply about how we talk about food, weight and health in today’s world , especially the impact of stigma, misinformation and unrealistic expectations.

This is also why I’m so passionate about shifting the conversation around obesity. It’s not about blame or willpower , it’s about understanding complexity and offering real, evidence, based support that actually helps people.

This isn’t about perfection.

It’s about real life, and helping people move from stuck to sorted in a way that actually lasts.
