The Weather Within: How Our Environment Shapes Our Mind
“We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.”
— Winston Churchill
From the moment we wake up until we finally switch off at night, we’re surrounded by our environment. It’s always there, quietly influencing how we feel, how we think, and how we move through the day.
We spend a lot of time shaping the spaces around us, but those spaces shape us in return. They affect our energy, our mood, our focus, and even our sense of safety. Sometimes it’s obvious. More often, it’s subtle. A room that’s too noisy. A space that feels cluttered. Constant pressure. Or even the absence of comfort or connection. Without realising it, we begin to adapt. We brace ourselves. We hold tension. We stop noticing that we’re carrying it.
When we talk about mental health, the focus is usually on what’s happening inside us—our thoughts, our past experiences, our biology, or our mindset. Those things matter. But they’re only part of the picture.
The world around us is shaping us too, often in ways we barely notice.
Maybe it’s time to step back and pay attention to what we’re stepping into every day. Over the last week I’ve been decluttering, cleaning and repainting the hell that was the cupboard under the stairs and I feel so much lighter, positive and free. I’ve also spent time outside in my garden, clearing, tidying, pruning and it feels so much more inviting to be in.
Have a look around your own space. Ask yourself how it makes you feel 😊
