10,000 Steps a Day, Yes or No?
We’ve all heard the advice — aim for 10,000 steps a day. But is it actually necessary, and more importantly, why does it matter?
In this video, Michael Clark, Registered Osteopath and Co-founder of Clarks Healthcare in Benfleet, Essex, explains the real reason daily movement is essential for your health — particularly for your spine, joints and overall function.
For most people, especially those working from home or sitting at a desk, daily step count is far lower than it should be. Many patients we see are doing fewer than 3,000 steps a day — and over time, that lack of movement begins to affect everything from weight management to joint health and mobility. Your spine is designed to move. It relies on regular movement to maintain alignment, function and fluid exchange within the joints and discs. Every step you take helps create a natural cycle of compression and decompression, drawing nutrients into the spine and keeping it healthy and mobile. In this video, you’ll learn:
• Why 10,000 steps is a useful target for most people
• What happens when your daily movement is too low
• How inactivity affects your spine, joints and metabolism
• Why you can’t undo long periods of sitting with a single workout
• The importance of spreading movement throughout the day
• Simple ways to increase your daily steps and movement
This isn’t about hitting a number for the sake of it — it’s about understanding how your body works and giving it the movement it needs to stay healthy. If you spend long periods sitting, working at a desk, or feel stiff and sluggish throughout the day, this is essential viewing.
