Some very kind words from a patient I recently started treating for hormonal acne (thank you!)

Skincare focuses solely on the surface. However, many persistent skin changes (including acne) are an external reflection of an internal imbalance. Because of this, finding a lasting resolution often means addressing the root causes from within.

I recently put together a range of herbal first aid medicines for various every day concerns, which I’ve been bringing to local artisan & farmers markets. I received this lovely feedback today from a customer I met at the weekend (swipe). It’s always so wonderful to hear individual experiences with herbal medicine!

The full range of products will soon be available on my website 🌱

🌱 The wonderful Plantain 🌱

🌱 It’s always the plants which are popping up in abundance that are most relied upon at that time, and I have certainly been using a lot of Plantain recently.

🌱 Seen here is the ribwort variety (Plantago lanceolota), the broadleaf variety (Plantago major) is also commonly used in herbal medicine, somewhat interchangeably.

🌱 Plantain is one of few herbs containing both mucilage and tannins, giving it the somewhat opposing actions of a demulcent and an astringent.

🌱 In practice this means plantain is used to both tone leaky tissues, and coat and soothe dry or inflamed tissues. This makes plantain an excellent ally in inflammatory conditions of the upper respiratory (particularly hay fever), gastrointestinal and urinary tracts.

If palpitations are recurrent or unexplained, appropriate clinical assessment is important to identify the underlying causes. Have you ever experienced palpitations?

Herbal medicine is a thorough and highly individualised clinical practice. Herbalists consider the whole person, providing herbs which influence the body’s own healing processes, to address the root cause of health concerns.

Rosemary
(Rosmarinus officinalis syn. Salvia rosmarinus)

A sprig of Rosemary has long been a symbol of remembrance. Personally, it’s a herb I’ve turned to during exams and ambulance night shifts to stay focussed and clear-headed.

This is just a little snippet of Rosemarys incredible medicinal properties 🌿

One of the biggest misconceptions about herbal medicine is that natural automatically means safe.

In reality, herbs are biologically active substances which produce real physiological effects.

That’s why Medical Herbalists are trained in:
🌱 Pharmacology
🌱 Chemistry
🌱 Anatomy & physiology
🌱 Herbal pharmacy
🌱 Materia medica
🌱 Differential diagnosis
🌱 Nutrition
🌱 Clinical skills
🌱 Pathology
& more

Respecting herbal medicine means understanding both its benefits and its risks. Herbal medicine deserves nuance - not fear, hype or oversimplification.

Headaches are a commonly reported symptom in clinic, but they are rarely explained by hydration status alone.

Chronic headaches can also be caused by:
🌱 Musculoskeletal tension
🌱 Nervous system regulation & stress
🌱 Hormonal fluctuations
🌱 Vascular & circulatory factors
🌱 Nutrient absorption & digestive function
🌱 Metabolic function
🌱 Sensory triggers
🌱 Medication effects
🌱 Sleep & circadian rhythm disruption

If headaches are recurrent or unexplained, working with a Medical Herbalist may help to identify and address underlying factors.
