Slow Down
For as long as I can remember, I rushed through almost everything I did. The washing, the cleaning, the driving, the gardening—even the days out that were supposed to be fun and relaxing. Looking back, I wasn't really present for any of it. My mind was always on the next job, the next place to be, or the next thing to tick off the list.
I thought that if I rushed, I was being productive. In reality, all I was doing was creating unnecessary stress for myself. I was constantly tense, my body ached, and I rarely allowed myself to simply enjoy the moment. Instead of living my life, I was racing through it.
Then one day, I caught myself hurrying yet again. I stopped for a moment and asked myself, What is the rush? Where am I trying to get to? Why does everything have to be done at full speed? What am I actually gaining by rushing through every task?
The answer was simple: nothing.
The washing still got done. The house still got cleaned. The garden still got tidied. The destination was exactly the same, but by rushing I had stolen the enjoyment from the journey and filled my days with unnecessary pressure.
Now, every now and again, I still catch myself slipping back into those old habits. It's easy to do. We live in a world that tells us to be constantly busy, always productive, always moving on to the next thing. But when I notice myself rushing, I gently remind myself to slow down.
Take a breath.
Walk instead of race.
Notice what's around you.
Things will get done in their own time. They always do.
I've realised there is no medal for finishing first when it comes to everyday life. No one remembers how quickly you folded the washing or how fast you cleaned the kitchen. What matters is how you felt while you were doing it and whether you made time to enjoy the moments in between.
The next few weeks are going to be a little quieter, and instead of filling every spare moment, I'm choosing to embrace the slower pace. I'm looking forward to taking my time, enjoying simple moments, and reminding myself that life isn't something to rush through.
If you're always hurrying from one thing to the next, maybe ask yourself the same question.
