I am a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist based near Beverley in East Yorkshire I qualified from De Montfort University Leicester in 2001 with a BSC Honours degree in Speech and Language Therapy. Since then I worked for the NHS providing assessment and treatment to children and families from 18 months up to 18 years of age up until 2013. Following a relocation from Lancashire to East Yorks

hire in 2013 I now work as an independent Speech and Language Therapist and take referrals directly from Parents and work either in your home or the child's school or nursery. I also work directly with schools, tailoring an individual package for schools directly. I have a specialist knowledge in the assessment and treatment of stammering and jointly led the Stammering service in my last NHS post. I am now also able offer assessment and therapy to adults with a stammer. My main work covers the following areas of difficulty:

Stammering

Speech delay / disorder

Language delay /disorder including Specific Language Impairment

Speech and Language Difficulties associated with General Developmental Delay

Attention and Listening difficulties

I am committed to my profession and to providing good practice and I regularly attend training courses to further my knowledge. Specialist training at the Michael Palin Centre for Stammering Children, in London and in the Lidcombe approach to stammering, enables me to provide specific treatment approaches in a specialist service for dysfluent clients. A large part of my work is with clients with speech difficulties and language impairment having had many years experience in these conditions working for the NHS. On-going professional development allows me to provide evidence based treatment within these areas. I strongly believe in early intervention for all Speech and Language Difficulties. Noticing a problem early and seeking appropriate advice and support often means it is much easier to make the changes you desire. I take referrals directly from parents and welcome enquiries over the phone or by email. I work as either the sole therapist or alongside the NHS therapy team if you are also receiving assessment or therapy on the NHS. I am a member of the Health and Care Professions council no SL07373, Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists no. 14563 the Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Independent Practice no.2251 and have an enhanced CRB check. You are welcome to ring and discuss your concerns in order to help you decide if Independent Speech and Language Therapy is the right choice for you.

This is interesting. In my 13 years of independent practice this has only happened twice. It's difficult to understand why, when we aim to work with those around the child to support them, often when statutory services such as the NHS are not actively involved and parents are funding private sessions. Most education settings are very grateful when they can receive additional support from us and the outcomes for the child are significantly improved when we all work together.

An article published in The Scotsman today highlights a growing issue across the UK: independent Speech and Language Therapists are being refused access to some education settings, and it is children who are affected.

We are now seeing reports of this across parts of England, Wales and Scotland.

In many cases, this is not because alternative provision is in place that meets the child’s needs, such as NHS services or school-commissioned therapy. Instead, decisions appear to relate to blanket policies based on employment setting.

All Speech and Language Therapists in the UK are registered with the HCPC and meet the same regulatory and professional standards, regardless of where they are employed. Professional standards do not vary by setting.

The focus must remain on ensuring that children can access the support they need from appropriately qualified professionals.

ASLTIP is engaging at national level to understand the drivers behind these policies and to address the issue constructively with education and policy stakeholders.

It's always a bittersweet moment when children I've worked with achieve their targets and no longer need to come. I miss them all but am absolutely delighted when they no longer need to visit me. Well done to two of my children and their families this week. All your hard work and commitment has paid off 🎉🙂.
