70 can feel a long way away when you’re 45.
But I’ve seen enough, sometimes very close to home, to know that I don’t want to wait until my body is struggling before I decide it deserves my attention.
So these are 5 things I’m prioritising now:
1. Sleep.
Proper, good-quality sleep. Giving my body and brain the time they need for rest and recovery, and being much more conscious of when I go to bed, not just how long I sleep.
2. Movement.
Strength and mobility matter to me more with every passing year. If I’m starting to notice stiffness or aches now, I want to respond now, rather than wait until they’re limiting what I can do.
3. Balance.
I want to trust my body. To move confidently, stay steady on my feet and be able to get myself comfortably up and down from the floor for decades to come.
4. Nutrition.
I’m not a nutritionist, but I try to eat in a way that supports the life I want to live, with plenty of protein, fibre and variety.
5. Connection.
To other people, but also to myself. Time to notice my own patterns. To be still. Slow down. Breathe. Hear myself think.
None of this feels particularly dramatic or groundbreaking.
And perhaps that’s the point.
I don’t want to wait for a wake-up call to start taking care of the person I’ll be twenty-five years from now.
She matters to me already.
