Sometimes there is something about summer that feels lighter and brighter
The summer sometimes offers us opportunities for more
☀️Positive Action as in opportunities to sit outside with a glass of iced tea.
Moments to walk outside more and maybe notice summer flowers.

☀️Positive Interaction
Perhaps summer is a great time meet up with a friend to enjoy a walk? Maybe a visit a beach?

☀️Positive thoughts, remembering that this isn’t about ignoring issues and challenges, summer weather doesn’t make problems magically disappear. Positive thinking is about adding some calming balance, just as we take exercise to help our body, taking a mindful moment can help us add balance. Take a moment right now to think of one of your strengths.

Positive psychology sometimes talks about the importance of noticing positive experiences, not so we ignore life’s challenges but because our brains are naturally very good at spotting problems and potential threats and summer seems to scatter little moments of goodness everywhere.

Perhaps happiness isn’t about waiting for perfect circumstances, perhaps it’s about noticing we are doing our best?

And if you’d like some help in identifying your preferred future, and what that first step might be, do feel free to chat with your local
or practitioner.

So here’s an interesting thing, what we do can be one of the most powerful things that helps change our mood.
Sometimes we might tell ourselves that we need to be in the right mood to make a change that we want to make, and we’ll do it when we feel more motivated or perhaps more confident or ‘when the time feels right’.
Thing is, if we wait to feel right, we might be waiting a while. This is the interesting bit, the relationship between behaviour and action, between what we think and what we feel emotionally is a two way street.

‘We are what we repeatedly do’

We call this positive action. Taking action first, much like the way someone may feel nervous about making the first step in contacting a friend and arranging a coffee together.

Someone may feel anxious about stepping into a gym for the first time, but, when they do, they feel so proud of themselves.

We can still take that first step towards managing our anxiety or maybe our phobia, even if we don’t feel ready just yet.

This isn’t about ignoring difficult emotions or pretending things are fine, self compassion is always important. It’s also not about always doing something, balance is best, and rest and relaxation matter too.

This is just to say sometimes doing something positive is the first step towards feeling something positive.

As ever, you know what’s best for you. If you’d like to talk about positive action with one of us, do get in touch.

Small actions have a habit of growing into bigger changes.

Hypnotherapy is it’s just a beautiful way to redirect your mind away from old, stuck unwanted patterns and toward new possibilities.
Sometimes we get stuck in a pattern of behaviour that no longer works for us and it feels a bit like we’re stuck on autopilot, doing the same thing yet hoping to for different results. And that’s honestly normal, no shaming here!
Habits can happen quickly, ‘we are what we repeatedly do’ (sometimes attributed to Aristotle)
Hypnotherapy may help you change your focus to redirect it to being the best version of you.
Whether it’s smoking/vaping or noticing that certain things make you anxious, maybe have a chat with a
practitioner or perhaps appeals more to you?

If you ever have that feeling of being anxious, maybe imagining what might happen and what if it’s worse..you might like to try this?

Noticing without judgement.
Just the simple act of noticing the thoughts can begin to change them. If the thoughts you’re having make you feel anxious, just notice the thoughts as if you’re just interested in the fact that they’re there, reminding yourself that thoughts aren’t facts. So do your best to let go of the need to analyse or change the thought or sensation and accept that the thought or sensation exists in this exact moment.

Now think of white clouds moving across a clear blue summer sky….
All thoughts are transient, moving and changing just like clouds in the sky.

Sometimes just noticing the thought can sometimes take the edge off anxiety. Wishing you a peaceful day

In solution focused hypnotherapy we talk about ‘positive thoughts’ and that doesn’t mean we’re asking someone to ignore their reality or to put on a brave face. That meaning is sometimes called the ‘tyranny of positive thinking’, the idea that we should be cheerful regardless.

If someone is facing illness, grief, uncertainty, financial worries, or any other significant challenge our approach is a compassionate one, we believe you, we’re here for you.
So why do we have this shorthand phrase ‘positive thoughts’?

There is some good evidence that the way we think about ourselves can influence how we feel and how we cope. When times are tough we sometimes give too much credence to our inner critic, the negative self talk that comes up with things we’d never say to a friend but will think about ourselves and then we vastly underestimate our strengths and resilience.
We can recognise that things are tough and still choose not to be unnecessarily harsh towards ourselves. We also recognise that we can’t ’turn off’ negative thoughts, if I ask you now not to think of an elephant, put any thoughts of elephants out of your mind…that just makes us think of elephants.

So what we mean by positive thought is to be kind to yourself, notices your strengths, be proud of yourself, reminding yourself that it’s okay not to be okay sometimes.

That phrase ‘positive thoughts’ is about us having a constructive view of ourselves and that means recognising not only the challenge in front of us, but also the strengths we will bring to coping with it.

Why might your hypnotherapist give you a relaxation recording to listen to outside of sessions?

One reason is that what we pay attention to has an effect on shaping our day.
So when we’re worried, sometimes our mind starts to negatively forecast, to start to think worst case scenarios about possible future problems. Then there’s our inner voice, the way we think about ourselves, starts to sound like a harsh inner critic.
And sometimes we might spend too much time thinking about things that haven’t happened and may never happen at all.

A relaxation recording gives us the space to practise directing our attention somewhere different for a short time. Maybe focusing on the idea of relaxation and the recording might use descriptions of calming scenes in nature too.

Listening to relaxation recordings isn’t about pretending problems don’t exist, it’s about helping our mind spend some time focusing on something other than threat, worry or self-criticism and to enjoy a moment of calm.

Do relaxation recordings work for everyone, no, there are no universal panaceas, the way to find out if they work for you is to chat with your hypnotherapist about relaxation recordings and what might suit you, and then trust yourself, you’re always the best judge of what works for you.

Like any skill we’ve learned, relaxation tends to improve with practice so the more often we gently guide our attention towards what helps us feel calmer, more confident and more in control is a lovely thing.

Sometimes people ask why we combine hypnosis with a solution focused approach? Hypnotherapy is a mixture of talking, a solution focused conversation, and the trance part.
Interestingly hypnosis on its own is not really a therapy, it’s more like a tool or a technique.
Most people arrive knowing exactly what they don't want, they absolutely know they don't want to feel so anxious or perhaps they have a fear of flying or they feel their confidence is too low. And, very often, people have a good idea of what they want to achieve, they want to feel calmer, more confident, or able to just get on a plane and go on holiday.
The tricky part is often how do we get from where we are to where we want to be? It’s that bit in the middle.

That’s why we use solution focused conversation, we have a purposeful chat about your best hopes, your strengths and skills and what that first small step might be, we are plotting the route to your preferred future.

Then we use hypnosis to help your mind bring that route to life. As our mind relaxes and we enter a state of absorption (a bit like getting absorbed in a great book) our mind gets the chance to imagine how we might ‘fill in the middle’, how to get from where we are to where we want to be.

It is a little like using sat nav on your phone, you know where you are and you
know your hoped for destination. The solution focused conversation helps identify the route, and hypnosis helps you travel it in a way that makes sense for you.

Different people may take different roads, but the destination is always their own. Where would you like your destination to be?

Do you ever get that ‘flat’ feeling?
It’s that low mood feeling when we’ve ‘run out of steam’ or like our phone running out of charge?
It happens to most of us occasionally and a bit of rest and self care can often get us up and running again.

It’s sometimes tempting to keep pushing ourselves or even to listen to our inner self critic for not feeling better and yet a kinder response is to slow down and practice some self care. Maybe try a little mindfulness technique of just noticing your thoughts, feelings, and sensations without labeling them as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, no judgement.

Maybe try some relaxation? It’s not about doing nothing, it’s about what you feel enriches you and what gives your mind and body meaningful rest.

What works for some is things like taking a quiet walk in nature, practicing
mindfulness or perhaps listening to a relaxation recording.
In hypnotherapy we often use guided imagery of the sights and sounds of nature for this reason.
Perhaps take one small step today and contact your local
or practitioner for a chat?

It’s always okay to seek help, it’s the kindest and most courageous thing we can do. If this low mood is affecting your daily life do have a chat with your GP.
