With a heatwave on the way in the UK, don’t be surprised if sleep feels a little more unsettled for a few days. Hot nights can make it harder for little ones to fall asleep, stay asleep and settle as easily as usual.
The good news? A few small tweaks can make a big difference 👇
🌡️ Keep bedrooms as cool as possible
Open windows in the cooler parts of the day (morning/evening), keep blinds or curtains shut during peak heat, and use a fan to circulate air around the room (not directly on baby).
👕 Dress lightly
Think breathable, natural fabrics and review your sleeping bag tog (or ditch it altogether if needed). A nappy/vest can absolutely be enough on very hot nights.
🛁 Try a lukewarm bath before bed
Avoid very cold baths - they can actually warm the body back up afterwards. Lukewarm is best.
💧 Hydration matters
You may notice babies wanting to feed more often in hot weather (especially younger babies). Follow their lead and keep offering fluids where age appropriate.
🤍 Adjust expectations slightly
Sleep may be a bit wobblier for a few days, and that’s OK. If bedtime takes longer or there are extra wakes, try not to panic or overhaul everything. Once temperatures settle, sleep usually does too.
Remember: this is temporary ☀️
