Be honest: how are you sitting right now? Most of us spend hours a day at our desks, pushing through a stiff neck or a dull ache between the shoulder blades, thinking it’s just part of the job. But your body wasn’t designed to just "push through." When you take exactly two minutes to set up your workspace correctly, you aren’t just adjusting furniture—you are actively reducing mechanical stress on your spine and protecting your energy for the things you love doing after 5 PM. Creating a healthy, pain-free workday starts with small habits.
Here is a simple, biomechanically sound checklist to properly adjust your office chair today:
The 90-Degree Rule: Adjust your chair height so your feet rest flat on the floor. Your knees should be level with or slightly lower than your hips, creating a stable base that unloads pressure from your lower back. You don’t need to sit bolt upright like a soldier. Angling your backrest slightly backward—to around 100 or 110 degrees —actually relaxes your back muscles and reduces the physical pressure on your spinal discs. Just ensure your upper back remains supported.
Support the Natural Curve: Slide your hips all the way to the back of the chair.
Adjust the lumbar support so it fits snugly into the natural inward curve of your lower spine. If you lean forward, your neck has to work twice as hard to hold your head up.
The Armrest Secret: Position your armrests so your shoulders can completely relax downward. If your armrests are too high, they shrug your shoulders up toward your ears, creating direct tension right into your neck muscles.
Eye-Level Alignment: Once your chair is set, look at your monitor. The top third of
your screen should be directly at eye level so your head rests neutrally over your
shoulders, rather than tilting forward.
Your challenge for today: Don't wait until the stiffness sets in to change your position. Take two minutes right now to adjust your chair, sit back into that support, and give your posture a reset. Your neck will thank you by the end of the week!
