Be honest: how are you sitting right now? Most of us spend hours a day at our desks, pushing through a stiff neck or a dull ache between the shoulder blades, thinking it’s just part of the job. But your body wasn’t designed to just "push through." When you take exactly two minutes to set up your workspace correctly, you aren’t just adjusting furniture—you are actively reducing mechanical stress on your spine and protecting your energy for the things you love doing after 5 PM. Creating a healthy, pain-free workday starts with small habits.

Here is a simple, biomechanically sound checklist to properly adjust your office chair today:

 The 90-Degree Rule: Adjust your chair height so your feet rest flat on the floor. Your knees should be level with or slightly lower than your hips, creating a stable base that unloads pressure from your lower back. You don’t need to sit bolt upright like a soldier. Angling your backrest slightly backward—to around 100 or 110 degrees —actually relaxes your back muscles and reduces the physical pressure on your spinal discs. Just ensure your upper back remains supported.

 Support the Natural Curve: Slide your hips all the way to the back of the chair.
Adjust the lumbar support so it fits snugly into the natural inward curve of your lower spine. If you lean forward, your neck has to work twice as hard to hold your head up.

 The Armrest Secret: Position your armrests so your shoulders can completely relax downward. If your armrests are too high, they shrug your shoulders up toward your ears, creating direct tension right into your neck muscles.

 Eye-Level Alignment: Once your chair is set, look at your monitor. The top third of
your screen should be directly at eye level so your head rests neutrally over your
shoulders, rather than tilting forward.

Your challenge for today: Don't wait until the stiffness sets in to change your position. Take two minutes right now to adjust your chair, sit back into that support, and give your posture a reset. Your neck will thank you by the end of the week!

“After suffering with debilitating back and hip pain for over 10 years I feel great, pain free and move easily after 6 sessions with Jason. He gave me a thorough examination and explained everything to me, it was the first time physio had bothered to do that! With treatment and regular exercises the transformation has been apparent week by week. I saw many physios over the years wo told me little could be done, one said it was & in my head. Jason encouraged me to push on and the rewards are life changing. I can enjoy the things I used to. Thank you Jason”

“Can’t recommend Jason enough! I was struggling with significant upper back, shoulder and arm pain, with muscle spasms and involvement of the nerves going down to my arm. It was impacting significantly on my day-to-day life and work. Had a few sessions with Jason, where he worked on my muscles and did some acupuncture as well, and within a few weeks everything was completely resolved. I couldn’t be more grateful and impressed with the results. Jason was always very professional and competent.”

Let’s be honest: our bodies weren't exactly designed to sit in a chair for 8 hours a day staring at a screen. If you find yourself finishing the workday with a stiff lower back, tight shoulders, or that dull ache at the base of your neck (often called "tech neck", you are definitely not alone!

Before you start worrying that something is seriously wrong, remember that a lot of this discomfort is just your body asking for a change of position. Here are three simple, practical tips you can try yourself today to give your body some relief:

 The 30-Minute Reset: Set a timer on your phone or desktop. Every 30 minutes, just stand up for 60 seconds. Shrug your shoulders, roll your ankles, or walk to get a glass of water. It resets your posture and gets the blood moving.

 The Chin Tuck: Sit up straight and look straight ahead. Gently draw your chin
straight back, as if you’re trying to make a slight double chin (don't tilt your head
down, just slide it back). Hold for 5 seconds and release. Repeat 5 times to relieve
pressure on the neck.

 The Seated Twist: While sitting in your chair, place your left hand on your right knee and gently rotate your torso to look over your right shoulder. Hold for a few deep breaths, then swap sides. It’s a great way to ease mid-back stiffness.

Small changes can make a massive difference in how you feel by the time 5:00 PM rolls around. Give these a try this week and see how your body responds!

Still feeling tight? Sometimes, your body needs a bit of expert guidance to get back to its best. If you've tried making a few adjustments and that nagging stiffness or pain just won't shift, we are here to help you get to the root of the issue.

Send us a message or get in touch with the team at Focus Physio to see how we can work together to get you moving comfortably again!

As we reach the final week of May, many of you have been hitting the trails and increasing your daily steps for National Walking Month.

While walking is one of the best ways to support cardiovascular health and joint mobility, a sudden increase in mileage can sometimes lead to minor aches or stiffness. If you’ve been feeling the strain in your feet, knees, or lower back, or a small ache in your hip or a "ping" in your knee, this is often a sign of a biomechanical imbalance. Addressing these minor issues now prevents them from becoming long-term obstacles to your fitness. Have you picked up an injury while out walking?

Our team at Focus Physio is here to help you recover with evidence-based treatment and personalised rehabilitation plans. 📩 DM us to book an assessment

Did You Know Your Skeleton Replaces Itself Every 10 Years? 🦴

It’s true! Your body is in a constant state of "remodelling." Old bone tissue is broken down and replaced by new tissue, meaning you effectively have a brand-new skeleton every decade. This process—known as bone remodelling—is heavily influenced by how you move. Bones follow Wolff’s Law, which states that bone grows and strengthens in response to the physical stress (loading) placed upon it. If you aren't loading your body correctly—or if you’re avoiding movement due to an old injury—your "new" skeleton might not be as strong or as balanced as it could be. Remember........

• Strength Training: Isn't just for muscles; it’s "armour-plating" your bones.
• Balance: Consistent, varied movement ensures your joints remodel to support your lifestyle, not just your desk chair.
• Recovery: Physio helps ensure that when your body "rebuilds," it does so with optimal alignment and function.
