Ankle Sprain 💥 I appreciate this isn’t the prettiest of posts but what will follow I think is important. This is currently my foot...ouch (yes) I injured myself playing netball over the weekend which is a sport renowned for ankle injuries. If this is you, or has been you, or you know of a friend then the following is immediately helpful when thinking about your journey back to ‘normality’

1. All the feels - getting injured sucks, especially if it cuts you out of playing sport or exercising in general. Allow yourself adequate sulking time, you deserve it.

2. In its acute phase, it’s important to adopt the principles of P.R.I.C.E (protection, rest, ice, compression, elevation)

PROTECTION - apply a form of support / splint
REST - stop activity and allow the tissues to start their healing
ICE - their may be some debate on this but a good physio recommend you me this week to do 3 rounds of 20minutes. Peas - damp tea towel.
COMPRESSION - likely in the form of a compression bandage.
ELEVATION - get that leg up. Helps to drain away the fluid from the site of injury.

3. If you’re able to, have the injury looked at by a Physio / Osteopath so that they can determine the grade of injury. Give it a few days before doing this so that the acute phase as passed a little. It will allow the practitioner to see the site of injury better and perform the tests they need to.

4. Ahhh how can massage help you ask???
Most will avoid massage therapists and I’m here to tell you that there’s plenty to be done. Massaging the areas above the injury site can compliment the body’s natural ‘drainage’ systems, in order to reduce the swelling around the tissue. Secondly, massage can help to ease other parts of the body that are now taken on extra ‘load’ if you’re unable to move / walk as you normally would. My right butt cheek and hip flexors are killing me so a good stretch off and some hands on a work are calling...

5. For now, my rehab consists of PRICE, weight bearing within a comfortable range and gently moving my ankle. Will keep you posted on how things progress....

🖐🏻 Wrists - this little nugget jumped out at me whilst training at home. For many of you, things like press ups, mountain climbers, walk-outs can put extra strain on the wrists. Whilst strengthening your wrists is a better long term solution, here are a couple of useful things you can do to ease any issues.

1) Towel fold - fold a small towel to your preferred thickness, place the base of your hand on the towel. Adding this cushioning will give more comfort when putting pressure through the wrists when performing exercises such as press ups or mountain climbers.

2) Assisted wrist flexion - flex the target wrist, and with the opposing hand, pull towards your body until you feel a stretch in your forearms.

3) Wrist Extension - on a mat, resume a neutral position on all fours, turn one wrist at a time in towards your body and swap.

Hold stretches for 30-45 seconds.
