In 1858, Henrietta Bowers Duterte became the first female undertaker/mortician in America. That's not all, she was African American and part of the Underground rail road. Henrietta went on to use her position in this profession to help many enslaved people escape; by pretending to be dead in coffins, or sometimes dressed in fine clothing as part of the funeral procession, a great risk to herself. The amount of people she saved is undocumented.

After the Civil War, Henrietta went on to travel across the country to speak on behalf of women's rights.
