What is a melanoma? 👇

Melanoma is a form of skin cancer, that 𝗰𝗮𝗻 be cured if it is removed in the early stages

❓ What should I do if I think I have a melanoma or if I want to get my moles checked?

If you have any moles that look irregular - or that are changing in size, shape or colour… or if you would like an expert to perform a head-to-toe check of all your moles, then arrange to see one of Midland Skin’s Consultant Dermatologists

❓ What is the treatment for melanoma?

The treatment is surgical excision of both the melanoma and of a safety margin of normal skin around it. In some cases, sentinel lymph node biopsy can be done at the time of diagnosis to see if the melanoma has spread to the lymph nodes. If the melanoma has spread, then surgical excision of the metastasis will be performed if possible. Alternatively, chemotherapy treatments may be used for metastatic melanoma.

❓ What is the outlook for someone who has had melanoma?

The prognosis (outlook) after a melanoma is dependent on how early or late the melanoma was at diagnosis. Early melanomas are said to be thin, that is, they only affect the top layers of the skin. If the depth (aka the Breslow thickness) is less than 1mm, then 90-95% of these melanomas can be cured. If the melanoma is 4mm or deeper, the cure rate is 45-60%

Spreading awareness about skin cancer is crucial in prevention and assisting in early detection. When looking at lesions on your skin (be these brown moles or pink) take into account the following criteria when assessing them 👇

🄰 Asymmetry: Are both halves of the lesion symmetrical?
🄱 Border: Does the lesion have an irregular border?
🄲 Colour: Has the lesion changed colour, or does it have varying colours?
🄳 Diameter: Is the lesion more than 6mm wide - or growing?
🄴 Evolving: Is the lesion changing - does it look different from others &/or is it changing in size, shape, or colour?

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month - and if you have a new or changing mole, the most important message is simple: get it checked, promptly 🙏

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 / 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐈 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐫? 👇

A suspicious lesion is one where the pattern, colour, border or evolution raises concern. The first-line tool used to assess this properly is dermoscopy - a magnified, polarised-light examination that improves accuracy compared with looking at the skin with the naked eye alone.

𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐕𝐬 𝐍𝐇𝐒: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭? 👇

On the NHS, urgent referrals in England are managed against national cancer standards, including the Faster Diagnosis Standard, and patients are often triaged through teledermatology before being directed to the right clinic for dermoscopy and, where needed, biopsy

Privately at Midland Skin, patients can self-refer and are seen by a Consultant Dermatologist for a consultant-led dermoscopic assessment. If a biopsy is needed, the most suitable technique - such as punch, shave or excision biopsy - is discussed and arranged promptly under local anaesthetic, often on the same day as the consultation.
