This literally happened yesterday. I was trying to process what happened but this description is so much better than I could ever have come up with.

This powerful quote from Melanie Klein reminds us of something play therapists witness every day: children understand far more than they are often given credit for.

Klein recognised that children may not express insight through words but through play, symbolism and story. In the playroom, children show us what they know, what they feel and what they are trying to make sense of; often with remarkable emotional clarity.

As play therapists, we don’t teach insight to children.

We create the conditions for it to emerge:

A safe and consistent therapeutic relationship
Respect for the child’s pace and process
Attunement to play as meaningful communication.

This quote challenges adult assumptions and reinforces a core value of play therapy: children are active meaning-makers not passive recipients of care.

When we truly listen to their play, children show us just how insightful they already are.
