Patients waiting for a liver transplant face one of the most unpredictable and challenging journeys in healthcare. The wait can last months or even years, and during that time many patients experience a gradual decline in strength, confidence and overall wellbeing.
That’s why the University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust introduced a digital prehabilitation service to support patients undergoing assessment and listing for transplant across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.
For a region where some patients travel up to two hours for appointments, a face‑to‑face prehab programme simply wouldn’t be accessible. A telehealth model removes that barrier, giving people the support they need, wherever they live, without adding extra strain to already complex lives.
Partnering with QuestPrehab has already shown:
• Patients report better quality of life and reduced anxiety • Objective markers of frailty and fitness have improved or remained stable • A patient‑led peer‑support group has formed organically through the programme • Feedback from both patients and clinicians has been overwhelmingly positive
Prehabilitation is becoming a vital part of the liver transplant pathway, helping patients stay as strong, resilient and prepared as possible while they wait for life‑changing surgery.
