The bowel screening programme helps to spot bowel cancer before symptoms start, when it’s most treatable. A screening kit will be sent to you in the post if you’re within the age range for the screening programme and registered with a GP.

The bowel cancer screening programmes uses a test called a faecal immunochemical test (FIT). For the test, you’ll collect a small amount of poo. This is sent to a lab where they’ll test for blood in your poo.
Screening can also help to find polyps (non-cancerous growths) which may be growing in the bowel. Polyps can become bowel cancer over time, screening can help to find them so they can be removed before they do.

It’s really important that if a FIT test is needed, that you follow the process.

The Met Office, in partnership with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), has issued a red heat alert, this level of heat presents a significant risk to health, particularly for older adults, babies and young children, and people living with long-term health conditions.

Over the next few days temperatures are expected to reach up to 35 degrees Celsius, with the red alert in place until Thursday 25 June.

There are some simple steps you can take to stay safe, such as:

Avoiding going out during the hottest part of the day (11am–3pm)
Keeping homes cool by closing blinds/curtains on sun-facing windows
Staying hydrated and avoiding excess alcohol
Checking in on vulnerable neighbours, friends and family
Knowing the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke

We appreciate the national concern regarding the current outbreak of Meningitis in Kent.

We would like to reassure you, that should there be any similar outbreak in our area, we will be informed of this by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). They will instruct us to take any action required. For the time being, we would like to reiterate that this is not the case.

Meningitis B vaccination was introduced in 2015, people born before this would not have been eligible for this vaccination. The NHS does not offer this vaccine to anyone routinely over the age of 2 years old. If you are wanting to be vaccinated against Meningitis B, you will need to find a private provider who can administer this for you.

Flu admissions are increasing in several regions, particularly in the north and midlands regions, and are forecast to rise further over the next 7-14 days.

The flu vaccine offers the best protection against severe illness and hospitalisation. However, it can take up to 2 weeks following vaccination to develop antibodies and an immune response.

The latest data shows that cases of flu and RSV have risen significantly in the past week and we are now seeing more flu cases among adults. Flu hospitalisations have increased by 63% in the past week and with increased mixing and socialising over the next few weeks, this is expected to exacerbate these increases further.

We’re offering walk-in flu vaccines for all eligible patients this Tuesday 16th Dec from 12–3 PM and Wednesday 17th Dec from 3–6 PM. Come in and get protected—no appointment needed!

Flu will often get better on its own, but it can make some people seriously ill, so it's important to get the flu vaccine if you're advised to.

If you have flu, there are some things you can do to help get better more quickly.
🛌rest and sleep
🧣keep warm
💊take paracetamol or ibuprofen to lower your temperature and treat aches and pains
🚰drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration

👋A pharmacist can give treatment advice and recommend flu remedies.

➡️Antibiotics do not work for viral infections such as flu. GPs do not recommend antibiotics for flu because they will not relieve your symptoms or speed up your recovery.
