1st of January is all about fresh starts and new beginnings. Many of us are ready to set up a vision and a plan for what we’d like to change in our daily routine to improve our health and wellbeing, but many of us can be caught into the cycle of short-lived New Year resolutions. To turn the wave of this and succeed, it pays off to follow well-known psychological principles that promote and support change. James Kwik, the author of the book ‘Limitless’ talks about 3 essential ingredients of change: the motivation, the mindset and methods. Within this framework, the motto I try to hold onto is: 'Change is a process not an event' so I don't expect miracles in a week. I've learnt that anything that promises quick results is deemed to be short lived and now I try to adopt a 'long-term' rather than a 'quick fix' mindset. Also, I know that willpower is in short supply, so using the principle of 'consistency over intensity' gives me more of a chance to achieve the change I want. But as I am an imperfect human being, I am still work in progress and today I am setting up new goals for the year ahead and all I can do is keep persevering.
