1️⃣One year on from becoming the first hospital in Birmingham to offer Aquablation therapy, we're delighted to mark this important milestone at The Harborne Hospital.

Since launching this innovative treatment with PROCEPT BioRobotics, we've been able to provide more men with a minimally invasive option for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), helping patients achieve excellent outcomes with reduced recovery times and a lower risk of side effects.

A huge thank you to all our consultant urologists and the wider team whose expertise and commitment have made this achievement possible 👏

Bringing together a team of highly experienced consultants specialising in conditions affecting the liver, pancreas and biliary system, the HPB Group offers patients access to expert assessment, diagnosis and treatment through a dedicated specialist service.

Working collaboratively with colleagues across oncology, gastroenterology, radiology and other specialties, the HPB Group provides comprehensive treatment for a wide range of complex HPB conditions.

✨The Harborne Hospital has further strengthened its specialist hip surgery offering with the successful introduction of ReCerf® ceramic hip resurfacing✨

Mr Shakir Hussain, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, recently performed a ReCerf® ceramic hip resurfacing procedure at The Harborne Hospital - a bone-conserving alternative to total hip replacement for selected active patients with hip osteoarthritis.

Hip resurfacing works by reshaping and capping the femoral head rather than removing it, helping to preserve natural bone, support hip biomechanics and maintain future treatment options. Advances in ceramic technology are now expanding the role of resurfacing by addressing some of the historical limitations of traditional metal-on-metal implants.

“Hip resurfacing remains an important option for selected patients, particularly those who are active and looking to maintain high level function including sports. Advances in ceramic technology now allow us to better preserve bone, support natural hip biomechanics and offer an advanced alternative for patients who may not be ideally suited to traditional metal-on-metal resurfacing. This is an exciting development in specialist hip surgery, supported by a growing body of clinical evidence. I look forward to continuing to develop access to advanced hip preservation, hip replacement and complex hip reconstruction options for patients requiring expert lower limb arthroplasty care.” Mr Shakir Hussain, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon.

We’re proud to highlight the expertise of our Cardiology team at The Harborne Hospital 💙

As we mark British Heart Week, we’re shining a light on patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure, a minimally invasive procedure that can help reduce the risk of recurrent stroke in selected patients by closing a small opening in the heart.

Delivered by expert cardiologist Dr Sayqa Arif, this treatment is an important step forward for our growing adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) service.

For appropriate patients, PFO closure can offer real benefits. It helps to lower the likelihood of a future stroke, and it some cases, avoids the need for long-term medication. As a minimally invasive procedure, it also typically involves a shorter hospital stay and supports a quicker return to normal daily activities.

As the only private hospital in the region to offer PFO closure, renal denervation, and Affera mapping and ablation technology, we’re proud to provide a truly comprehensive, forward-thinking cardiac service for our patients.

Sarah was looking forward to enjoying the first few months of married life when worsening period pain led to a diagnosis of endometriosis.

But during surgery, doctors discovered the condition was far more extensive than expected, and further tests revealed suspected cancer. Within days, Sarah was back in surgery, where it was confirmed the cancer had started in her appendix and spread to her bowel, bladder and reproductive organs. She underwent a complex operation to remove both the cancer and endometriosis, and was given a stoma.

Sarah went on to have chemotherapy at The Harborne Hospital. She says “I felt immediately supported and cared for. My consultant oncologist, Dr James Good, was brilliant. I had endless questions, not knowing what to expect, because everyone's experience of chemotherapy is different. Dr Good was calm, honest and reassuring – exactly what I needed. Thanks to him, I felt less nervous going into my first treatment.”

Today, Sarah is cancer-free. “I’m early into my recovery, but I’m easing back into the things I love. I’ve returned to my work as a copywriter, now focusing on health writing, which now feels especially meaningful. I can cook again, stand for longer periods, and even make miniature dollhouses - a hobby that brings me calm and joy. ”

We are proud to announce that we now offer the Medtronic Affera™ ablation system at The Harborne Hospital.

The Affera system combines high-resolution 3D mapping of the heart with advanced pulsed field (PFA) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) technology, to treat heart rhythm disorders such as atrial fibrillation through a single catheter.

For patients this can mean faster recovery times, improved safety and the potential for better long-term outcomes.

Affera joins our comprehensive suite of advanced PFA (pulse field ablation) platforms, enabling our clinicians to select the technology best suited to each individual case, supporting personalised and effective patient care.

Prof Tarv Dhanjal, Consultant Cardiologist, and Electrophysiologist says: “Pulsed Field Ablation technologies have gained considerable global momentum in treating abnormal heart rhythm disorders over the past few years. Data is consistently demonstrating improvements in procedural efficiency and safety with emerging evidence of improved long-term outcomes when compared to conventional ablation energies.
