“What if I don’t know what to say?” is one of the most common worries people have about starting counselling.

At Change, people do not need to arrive with a polished explanation or a clear plan. A first conversation can begin with uncertainty. The counsellor’s role is to listen, understand what matters to the person and help them explore what they would like to be different.

Making that first step feel human and manageable is part of widening access to psychological support across Birmingham — and it is work strengthened by our counsellors, volunteers, trustees, partners and supporters.
Help us reassure more people that they do not need perfect words to begin. Follow or share Change’s work.

When someone says they are thinking about counselling or therapy, they may not be asking you to solve the problem. They may simply be testing whether it feels safe to say it aloud.

For educators, community workers, friends and colleagues, a calm and respectful conversation can reduce some of the fear around asking for help.

What helps a conversation feel safe to you?

Sometimes the most important change begins before a counselling session, when someone feels able to say “I think I need some support.”

Change works to make that first step feel clearer, safer and more manageable. Through compassionate counselling, practical information and community connections, we help reduce the uncertainty that can stop people from reaching out.

This work is made possible by the commitment of counsellors, volunteers, trustees, partners and supporters who believe that access to psychological support matters.

If you share that belief, follow our work and help more people in Birmingham discover that asking for help is a strength.

Reaching out for aid is as an act of bravery that reflects a person’s existing strengths, agency, and readiness for change. Rather than defining help-seeking as dependency or weakness, SFBT invites exploration of what enabled the person to take that step and how this existing capacity can be extended toward their preferred future.
