It’s Day!

Across the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, our research colleagues are wearing red today to show their support for research.

This global campaign celebrates everyone involved in research across the world - from those taking part in studies, to the teams working behind the scenes to design, deliver and support it all.

A simple way to recognise and thank the people helping research move forward. ❤️

We would like to say a big thank you to a number of local businesses and community members for their generous support in helping us arrange a very special wedding last week. We are grateful to the New Inn, Asda Cape Hill and Queslett, Dave’s Fruit and Veg, and members of the Harborne community for their kind donations and contributions. 💙

A busy but very rewarding day for us today as we supported our local community by donating a buffet to the QEH Cancer Ward for a very special end-of-life wedding.

Moments like these remind us how important it is to come together and support those facing difficult times. We are honoured to have been able to play a small part in making the day memorable for the couple and their loved ones.

A huge thank you goes to all of our customers who generously donate their spare change into the charity tubs at the bar. Your kindness helps us continue our community and charity work, making a real difference to people when they need it most.

Thank you for your ongoing support ❤️

Congratulations to Rebekah Smith, who has been named Volunteer of the Year at the British Dietetic Association (BDA) Awards! 🎉💙

Becky is a highly experienced Head and Neck Dietitian whose dedication extends far beyond her clinical role. Through her extensive volunteer work, she has made a significant contribution to the dietetics and nutrition community.

From revamping and editing the ePENlines newsletter, to supporting the Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Group (PENG) committee, helping organise the annual PENG Symposium at the BAPEN Conference, contributing to national guidelines for head and neck cancer, and championing the work of PENG at study days and conferences Becky’s commitment is truly outstanding.

Susan Price, Associate Director (Inclusion) at UHB and Chair of the British Dietetic Association, said: " I had the privilege of hosting the BDA Awards and helping to present Becky with her award. Having worked with Becky at UHB for a number of years, it was a particularly proud moment to see her recognised for her outstanding contribution to the profession."

Well done Becky. 👏

In celebration of International Clinical Trials Day 2026 last week, our brilliant research and innovation colleagues at QEHB hosted their annual research showcase 🎉

There was a real buzz in the air as colleagues, patients and visitors came together to explore the incredible research and innovation taking place across the hospital.

This year’s event was made even more special as it coincided with the 20th anniversary of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) – a theme reflected throughout the event.

Delivery, data and governance teams were among those showcasing the important work they do every day through interactive stands and activities, helping bring the world of research to life ✨

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the event such a success!

It's going to be 𝑯𝑶𝑻 over the next few days, and while we all love a bit of sunshine, the heat can catch people out quicker than you think. 🥵

Remember to:
💧 Drink plenty of water (and go easy on the alcohol).
🧴 SPF 30+, hat, sunglasses and shade — especially between 11:00–15:00.
🏃 Save workouts and outdoor jobs for cooler times of day.
🏡 Keep blinds closed in sunny rooms and open windows when it cools down.
❤️ Check in on older neighbours, friends and family.

If you need medical help over the long weekend, using the right service can save you time and ensure you get the best care. Here’s how to stay well and get support if you need it:

✅ Visit your local pharmacy – Many are open all weekend and can help with minor illnesses like coughs, colds, sore throats, UTIs, sinus infections, and skin conditions. Check which pharmacies are open near you via the link in the comments.
✅ Use NHS 111 – Available 24/7 online or by phone for urgent advice, and to be directed to the right service, including urgent treatment centres and out-of-hours GPs.
✅ Only use A&E for life-threatening emergencies.
