Recent events involving Legacy Independent Funeral Directors have shocked and saddened us all.
First and foremost, our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with every family who has been affected. The death of someone we love is one of life's greatest sorrows. To have that grief compounded by concerns about the care afforded to a loved one is almost beyond comprehension. No family should ever have to endure such additional anguish, and our hearts go out to each and every one of them.
The actions alleged against one individual have understandably caused anxiety and have shaken public confidence. We appreciate that many people may now be asking questions about the Funeral profession and wondering how they can be certain their loved one will receive the care, dignity and respect they deserve.
We want to offer reassurance.
At Mortons Funeral Directors, caring for those who have died is not just the service we provide - it is a privilege and a responsibility that we have never taken for granted. Since 1898, our company has remained in the ownership of the same two families, serving generations of families across the West Midlands and beyond, with compassion, integrity and professionalism. Those values have guided every decision we have made for well over a century and continue to do so today.
Mortons are proud members of both the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) and the National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF). Membership of these professional organisations is not merely symbolic. It requires us to comply with their Codes of Practice and subjects our premises, procedures and administration to regular independent inspection and scrutiny.
Professional standards matter.
As the owners of Mortons, both my Dad Derek, & I are licenced Funeral Directors under the British Institute of Funeral Directors and together with several members of our team, hold recognised professional qualifications in Funeral Service. Other colleagues are currently working towards those qualifications because professional education is a condition of employment within our organisation. We believe every family deserves to know that those entrusted with the care of their loved one are appropriately trained, competent and accountable.
We believe families should be able to place absolute trust in those caring for their loved one. For that reason, every member of our team undergoes a DBS check before joining Mortons. It is one of many safeguards we have in place to ensure the integrity, security and respectful care that every family has the right to expect.
For many years, we have also supported the introduction of mandatory national registration and licensing for all Funeral Directors, together with compulsory professional qualifications across the profession. We firmly believe these measures would strengthen public confidence, establish consistent standards and provide additional safeguards for families at the time they need them most.
It is also important to remember that the overwhelming majority of Funeral Directors throughout the United Kingdom are dedicated, sincere and honourable people. They regard Funeral Service not simply as a career but as a vocation - one built upon compassion, trust and the quiet privilege of serving others during their darkest hours.
One individual's actions must never be allowed to define an entire profession.
If recent events have caused you concern, or if you would simply like to understand more about the standards we uphold, our doors are always open. We would be pleased to welcome you to Mortons, show you our facilities, explain the care we provide, and answer any questions you may have; an open, honest conversation, perhaps over a cup of tea or coffee.
Trust is earned, not assumed.
We remain committed to earning that trust every single day through kindness, professionalism, transparency and the respectful care of every person entrusted to us.
From our family to yours, thank you for the confidence you continue to place in Mortons Funeral Directors - it is a responsibility we will never take for granted.
