Why you're tired but can't sleep - and what actually helps
You're tired, so very tired. And now, finally, it's time to sleep, your brain has other ideas.
The night-time thoughts arrive like unwanted motorway traffic thundering past your bedroom door. This turbo-charged wakefulness now has a name - 'twired' - the double whammy of being so tired you're wired.
Here's what's actually happening, and it's not what most sleep advice will tell you.
Your brain thinks you're in danger.
Not literally, you know there's no tiger in the room. But the same threat-detection system that kept your ancestors alive is still running in you, and it's not the best at distinguishing between a genuine emergency and the low-level, ambient stress of modern life.
When that system activates, it does exactly what it's designed to do. You are vigilant and ready for action which is the opposite of what you need at midnight.
The result is what sleep researchers call hyperarousal - a state where the nervous system is quietly switched on, monitoring, scanning, processing. Your body is horizontal but your mind is not.
This is why the standard advice to "just relax," "try a warm bath," or "put your phone down an hour before bed", often doesn't touch it. You're not falling asleep because you haven't tried hard enough. You're not falling asleep because something deeper than willpower is keeping the switch on.
