Does Hypnotherapy Work for Co***ne Addiction?
The honest answer: yes, for the right kind of co***ne use. Not for all of it.
If your co***ne use has gone from occasional weekend social to something you're using more often, in more contexts, and increasingly hiding from people in your life — hypnotherapy can be highly effective. If you're physically dependent, drinking through the comedowns, losing significant amounts of money or relationships, or thinking about su***de — you need specialist medical and clinical support first, and hypnotherapy can be a complement to that, not a substitute.
This post is for the first group. The work I do, why it works, when it doesn't, and what to expect.
Why willpower fails for co***ne specifically
Co***ne has a particular neurochemistry that makes willpower-based quitting unusually hard.
Most habit-forming substances train your brain to expect reward in a roughly predictable way — drink coffee in the morning, get the dopamine hit, repeat tomorrow. Co***ne does something different. The hit is bigger, faster, and shorter than almost anything else your brain encounters legally. By the time the hit has faded, your brain is already asking when the next one is coming.
This means the addiction lives at a level willpower can't really reach. You can decide on Monday morning that you won't use this weekend. By Friday night, with stress accumulated and willpower depleted, your conscious mind is doing all the negotiating before your unconscious mind has noticed.
This is why most co***ne users I work with have already tried to stop on willpower alone, often multiple times. They're not weak. They've used the wrong tool.
How the work actually goes
In a typical course of work for co***ne, I'd combine four approaches:
Clinical hypnotherapy to change the unconscious associations between co***ne and reward. Co***ne isn't usually just co***ne — it's also social confidence, energy, escape from boredom, a way of marking the weekend, a part of identity. The hypnotic work changes those associations, so the co***ne stops feeling like the answer to the underlying need.
Neuroscience-informed techniques to work with how co***ne has rewired the brain's reward system. Repeated use floods the brain with far more dopamine than any natural reward produces, and the brain adapts by dampening its own reward response — which is why food, exercise, s*x, and ordinary pleasures start to feel flat, and why willpower alone so rarely works. Understanding this shapes how we use repetition, state change, and new associations in session to help your brain rebuild healthier reward pathways, so normal life starts feeling rewarding again.
NLP and Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy for the thought patterns that justify continued use. The "I'll just have a small amount". The "It's only at weekends". The "I'm not really an addict because I can stop for a week if I want to". These are the patterns that keep you in the cycle even when you know it's a problem.
EMDR, where appropriate, for the underlying drivers. A lot of co***ne use sits on top of unprocessed trauma, anxiety, or depression. If we don't address what the co***ne is for, the user often just transfers the dependency to alcohol, gambling, or another substance. EMDR works directly on stuck emotional patterns and can produce significant change in fewer sessions than talk therapy alone.
How long it takes
For moderate habits caught early, just a few sessions may be enough. Longer-standing or heavier use takes more.
What you'll usually notice:
In the first 1–2 sessions — sleep improves, the constant background mental noise quietens, the automatic urge for a Friday line starts to feel less urgent.
In the middle sessions — the underlying drivers start surfacing. This is often the harder part of the work, but it's where the lasting change happens.
In the later sessions — the co***ne has stopped feeling like an option in your day-to-day life. Not because you're resisting it, but because it's no longer interesting to you in the way it was.
What clients tell me afterwards
The phrase that comes up repeatedly: "I keep waiting for the cravings and they're just not coming." That's the difference between willpower-based quitting and unconscious-level change. Willpower-based quitting feels like fighting yourself. Successful hypnotherapy work feels like becoming someone for whom the habit no longer makes sense.
When hypnotherapy isn't enough
To be straight about this: hypnotherapy is not the right tool for severe co***ne addiction. If any of the following apply, please contact specialist services first — your GP, NHS local addiction services, Co***ne Anonymous (co***neanonymous.org.uk), or private rehab:
You're using daily, or near-daily
You're using to manage a comedown from previous use
You've lost significant amounts of money, jobs, relationships, or housing because of co***ne
You're using on workdays, in work environments, or while caring for children
You've experienced co***ne-related health problems (cardiac, neurological, mental health crises)
You're having thoughts of self-harm or su***de
Hypnotherapy can be a useful adjunct alongside specialist care for severe addiction. But it shouldn't be the only thing you're doing.
Confidentiality
Most co***ne clients haven't told their families, partners, or workplaces. Sessions are fully confidential — the only exceptions are immediate-danger situations, which is true for any therapist. I work from clinics in Birmingham (Edgbaston) and London (Harley Street), or online via Zoom.
The first step is a free initial phone consultation. We'll talk about what's been happening, what kind of help would suit you best, and whether hypnotherapy is the right fit. If it isn't, I'll say so.

What our clients say - https://hypnotherapy4freedom.co.uk/reviews
Is co***ne addiction physically addictive in the way alcohol is? Co***ne doesn't produce the same physical withdrawal syndrome as alcohol, but it produces strong psychological dependency and a comedown that can feel physically severe. Severe long-term use can produce cardiac and neurological problems that need medical attention.
2. How long until I'd be expected to stay co***ne-free after treatment? Most clients I work with stay co***ne-free long-term, but I never promise specific outcomes. Some clients have one or two slips during or after treatment that we work through; this isn't necessarily a sign that the work hasn't worked.
3. Will my employer find out? Sessions are fully confidential. I never contact anyone in your life unless there's an immediate-danger situation.
4. Do I need to tell my partner I'm getting help? You don't have to. Many clients work with me without their partner's knowledge initially. Whether and when to tell people in your life is your decision. See less

Emotional Eating / Binge Eating
You know that feeling when you open the fridge even though you just ate dinner?
You're not hungry…
But you're looking for something anyway.
That's emotional eating.
Maybe you had a stressful day at work…
Maybe you got into an argument with your partner…
Maybe you're just overwhelmed and exhausted and need something to take the edge off…
So you eat.
Chips, biscuits , leftovers, whatever you can find.
But here's what I need you to know:
This isn't a willpower problem…
It's a brain chemistry problem.
Let me explain.
When you're stressed, anxious, or emotionally drained, your brain is scrambling to find serotonin and dopamine – the chemicals that make you feel calm and okay.
Food gives you a quick hit of those chemicals (especially carbs and sugar).
That's why you reach for it.
But if your brain isn't producing enough serotonin and dopamine on its own, you'll keep going back to the fridge, looking for that relief.
Stress → emotional eating → guilt → more stress
The cycle doesn't stop because you lack discipline…
It stops when your brain gets balanced
Hypnotherapy helps your brain balance the serotonin and dopamine
When those levels are balanced, your brain stops desperately seeking them from food addiction
That means:
- You're not opening the fridge every time you're stressed
- Late-night snacking becomes less frequent
- Cravings become manageable instead of overwhelming
- Bad days don't automatically trigger eating
- The guilt-and-stress cycle finally breaks
If you're tired of the guilt and the cycle, the answer isn't trying harder…
It's rebalancing the brains chemistry that drives those urges in the first place.

Insomnia, Sleep Issues , Misophonia
Client referral posted today ,
" Great, and effective hypnotherapist. Stuarts techniques really work and will change you're life for the better.
Hi my name is Neil. I came across Stuart Downing when I found myself seeking out hypnotherapy to treat problems I was having with my sleep due to living next door to previous neighbours who were very noisy and whom had kept me awake. Thankfully, after a couple of months, the neighbours had moved on, but unfortunately as a result, I developed an anxiety about getting to sleep, which in turn lead to me developing an insomnia which was caused by the anxiety. I had also developed Misophonia as a result, and had become hypersensitive to certain noises, such as any bangs or thuds. Even though the neighbours had left, my anxiety still persisted, which only caused me even more anxiety as I couldnt understand why I just couldnt relax as I knew the neighbours were no longer there. It got too the point where the anxiety around my sleep was so bad, that it really started to have a profound effect on my life. I felt I couldnt enjoy life anymore, I just wasnt happy. I had felt like I had lost the ability to relax, as a result it really started to effect my relationships with my family as I just wasnt me anymore, so to speak. Thats when I knew I had to do something as I felt it was destroying my life. I researched hypnotherapy. I was curious as to how it worked, and researched whether or not it would be beneficial for the issues that I was going through. I sought out a few hypnotherapists, thats when I came across Stuart Downing. I did my research on him, and discovered that he could treat issues around sleep/anxiety. I read his reviews, which were all positive. I booked a consultation with Stuart, who was very friendly and reassuring and explained how hypnotherapy worked and the methods he was going to deploy in helping to heal me. In the consultation, Stuart told me that I would only require three to four sessions at the most, which I was surprised about to be honest, as I felt so afflicted by my issues. What can I say? Well, after just one session, I already noticed a vast improvement in my sleep quality. I was sleeping longer and deeper, and waking up totally refreshed. Over the last few weeks of the sessions , my sleep and anxiety has just got better and better. I feel much less anxious, and lot more relaxed, like a weight has been lifted. I am so glad that I decided to invest in the sessions with Stuart, and would recommend it to anyone who is considering hypnotherapy. Stuart helped me learn that a lot of fear is irrational and totally unnessacary, and that I can rationalise with myself that I do not need to feel that fear. I have also learnt extremely effective relaxation techniques, which have really helped me. I f I ever experience any difficulties in the future, I will be sure to utilise these techniques. So, if you have any issue that is effecting you to the point where it is having a profound effect on you're life, then I would highly recommend that you book yourself a consultation with Stuart Downing, it can and will change you're life!

Insomnia and Sleep Issues
Lying awake at night, staring at the ceiling, feeling wired but exhausted?
If that sounds familiar , there’s a good chance your cortisol levels are out of control.
And here’s the deal: high cortisol is more than just a bad night’s sleep—it’s a serious roadblock to your health, energy, and your ability to hit the flow state.
Cortisol is your body’s built-in alarm system.
It’s meant to help you handle stress, but when it sticks around too long—especially at night—it can wreak havoc on your sleep.
Studies show that elevated evening cortisol is one of the biggest culprits behind tossing and turning, disrupted sleep cycles, and that feeling of being “tired but wired”.
When your cortisol levels are too high in the evening, your body stays in a state of alertness, making it nearly impossible to relax and fall asleep.
And poor sleep doesn’t just affect your mood—it drags down your entire health, energy, and performance.
The Cost of High Cortisol:
1. Disrupted Sleep
High cortisol messes with your body’s natural circadian rhythm, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. You wake up feeling drained, no matter how long you’ve been in bed.
2. Increased Stress and Anxiety
Cortisol is linked to heightened stress responses. If your cortisol stays high, your body is constantly in “fight-or-flight” mode, which leads to more stress, anxiety, and mental fog during the day.
3. Blocked Flow State
Cortisol doesn’t just affect your sleep—it blocks your ability to enter the flow state. The flow state is where you’re fully focused and performing at your best, but high cortisol keeps your brain stuck in overdrive, making it impossible to focus deeply or think creatively.
Now, imagine what happens when you cut evening cortisol by 25%.
You’re not just lowering your stress—you’re giving your body the green light to relax, sleep deeply, and wake up energized.
Lowering cortisol improves your sleep quality, reduces anxiety, and opens the door for you to finally access the flow state.
When cortisol comes down:
1. Deep, Restorative Sleep
Lower cortisol allows your body to enter its natural rest-and-recover mode, improving sleep quality and helping you wake up refreshed and ready to take on the day.
2. Reduced Anxiety, More Clarity
When your cortisol levels are balanced, you’ll notice less anxiety, better mental clarity, and an increased sense of calm. This sets you up for a more productive, focused day.
3. More Consistent Flow State
With cortisol in check, your mind and body can work together, making it easier to slip into the flow state—where creativity, focus, and high performance come effortlessly.
You don’t have to spend another night staring at the ceiling, trapped in a cycle of poor sleep and high stress.
Lowering your evening cortisol naturally is possible, and it’s the key to better sleep, more energy, and consistent access to the flow state.

Based on what we now know about the brain, the neuroplasticity and the biology of belief, you can begin to approach addiction and recovery from a new perspective. Using newly discovered and clinically accepted methodologies, the mind and behaviour modification techniques work to retrain and recondition at the core unconscious level. The brain is actually a supple, malleable organ, as ready to unlearn as it is to learn, capable of transforming vicious circles into virtuous circles of resetting and repairing its internal communications. Far more than once dreamed possible, the brain can, if not always, cure/heal itself.

Neuro-Restructuring Techniques work.At Harley Street Addiction Specialist we have the correct tools and methods to help stop the addictive patterns in the brain and the body. These tools and processes are proven, researched and powerful.
Addictions centre around alterations in the brain’s mesolimbic dopamine pathway, also known as the reward circuit, which begins in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) above the brain stem.

We know that the brain is constantly changing. The neuroplasticity of the brain allows focused treatment to create new neural connections. Without treatment the brain uses neural pathways to trigger emotions, needs, pleasure and cravings, which feed the addiction. Treatment changes those responses by rewiring of the neural pathways and the subconscious mind, thereby bringing an entirely different reaction.

Consequently, when exposed to any of the old triggers, the brain doesn’t automatically respond in the old way because it now responds in a stronger and healthier manner. The very thing that used to cause cravings and relapse, now actually reinforces the commitment to overcome the addictive behaviour.

Bipolar Disorder and Hypnotherapy
It can sometimes feel like you’re completely at the mercy of unpredictable, dramatic mood and energy changes.Life with bipolar disorder is a pretty major challenge. Everybody’s moods fluctuate but when you have ‘manic depression’ the highs and lows are so much higher and lower, with good moods where you feel like you rule the world and bad moods where you feel like the world has completely crushed you.
Typically, when those euphoric moods get going, you feel like you can do anything, like there cannot possibly be any bad consequences of what you do. You lose all sense of perspective and rational judgement, leading you to behave in ways which have disastrous results.
When the downward swing starts, it all heads off in the other direction. Everything is terrible and the whole world is against you and what’s the point of getting up in the morning, or indeed anything? Once again, you have lost your perspective.

Learning to read storm warnings

Although other people can see the signs of these moods coming on, and developing into full blown emotional hurricanes, it can seem as if there’s no way for you yourself to tell that it is happening and that it’s time to take preventive action.

But overwhelming and insurmountable though these patterns might feel, it is actually possible to get more control, to learn to spot the danger signals, and take action to avoid getting derailed – again.
The goal with hypnosis for bipolar disorder is to reduce the client’s stress levels and help them to focus on the positive aspects.
