Make sure that kids know how to wash their hands when visiting animal attractions.
Soap and water is by far the most effective safeguard when it comes to avoiding illness.
A guidance article by the UK Government has recently been updated – and it contains plenty of information about why teaching younger children about hand washing is SO important.
How to have a fun and healthy farm visit with the family acknowledges that a farm visit can be “one of the most enjoyable and educational experience outdoor activities for kids”, whilst at the same time pointing out that such outings present a health risk from both the animals and their surroundings.
Young children are classed as a “vulnerable group” along with the elderly, pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals, says the update.
Deeply unpleasant illnesses can be contracted from animal attractions, petting zoos and farm visits with resulting symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, fever and aching bodies.
Soap and water – not gels
Hand sanitisers and wipes are not appropriate when it comes to hand hygiene says the guidance, because of the types of germs that could be present. And they are also largely ineffective when hands are visibly dirty. “Hand gels or wipes are not a substitute for washing your hands after visiting a farm” it emphasises.
“Washing your hands thoroughly with liquid soap and warm running water immediately after you have had contact with animals or the areas where they have been and at the end of your visit will reduce the risk of infection.”
