In life, as in words, perspective is everything. Last weekend’s experience was a strong reminder of just how influential our language can be. A single word can shape an entire narrative. The original title of a recent article about my journey used language that didn’t fully align with my story or the message I aim to convey. Thankfully, after some discussion, we’ve seen a change that better reflects the positivity and purpose that drives my work.

The two headlines you see may seem similar, but the implications of each are worlds apart. This is a lesson in the weight of our words and actions, and it’s a call to all of us to use them with care and intention.

I’m grateful for the overwhelming support and the heartfelt messages I’ve received, your encouragement fuels my commitment to making a positive impact. And for those who’ve yet to read the updated article, I invite you to do so here:

Together, let’s continue to stand up for what’s right, to challenge misconceptions, and to fight, however tough the battle, for truth and justice in our narratives. Every voice counts, every action matters, and it’s these principles that guide the work we do. Thank you for being a part of this journey with me.

I was so excited to be asked to feature in the Birmingham Mail. I felt it was an achievement to be highlighted for the work I have been doing around the city and out of it. I was eager to share my work and highlight some important topics surrounding mental health. I was then excited to share with you all.

Unfortunately I was sent the article today by a friend and as soon as I saw the title I was immediately disgusted. As a black business owner in the field of mental health there are so many challenges and hurdles I have to face, because I don’t fit the narrative. How I look, how I dress, how I speak!! But to be able to work with some amazing organisations and people is a testament to what hard work can do and I work with a lot of young people and like to show and talk about that.

So to have my first interview with a Birmingham based paper and the headline be about gangs just brought me straight back to earth and reminded me of where we are. I would never say anything of the sort as I have never been apart of a gang and therefore “leaving them behind” is a very damming statement to make. I actually said how much I loved my childhood growing up in ladywood and the fun I would have. I’m not ashamed or embarrassed of where I am from and this caption paints it in a very negative light. I don’t need to lie for likes or views because that’s not my story. I wanted people to know my story! I hate that I am having to make a post like this but feel I HAVE to as I don’t want people to see this and think this is acceptable .

I also want to send a caution to people who do get interviewed. I was very smart with my answers as I do understand journalist culture and even then I couldn’t escape the title, so please be careful. I have since contacted the reporter so we will see what the response is. In the meantime I will continue the work I am doing as I love what I do and will continue to advocate and fight for people.

We cannot let people with no understanding of us dim our lights!! So as frustrated as I am I will not turn my light off.

Let’s keep shining.

In our conversations and internal dialogues, certain terms are tossed around with ease: 'happy,' 'normal,' 'purpose,' They're used as milestones in our personal journeys, the destinations we're striving towards. But have we ever stopped to question our understanding of these terms? Do we truly comprehend what we're seeking?

Quite often, we chase a certain feeling or state of being without being able to define it precisely. When asked to articulate what 'happiness' or 'normalcy' looks like to them, many individuals struggle to provide a clear response. Does this mean they are incapable of achieving these states? Certainly not.

How will you know when you've arrived at your destination if you can't identify it? If 'happiness' is an undefined entity, how can you recognize when you've finally attained it? This is where the importance of personal definitions comes into play.

Creating your own definitions of what you're pursuing is a fundamental step in your journey towards self-discovery and fulfillment. It's about painting a vivid picture of your desired destination. What does happiness look like to you?

Remember, your definition doesn't need to align with societal expectations or someone else's viewpoint. It's YOUR happiness, YOUR normal, YOUR purpose. Embrace the power of defining these terms for yourself and chart a clearer path towards your own fulfilment.

Of course! Here are the hashtags in a continuous format for easy copying and pasting:

World Mental Health Day shines a spotlight on a crucial issue, but what does it truly mean?

Does our commitment last for just 24 hours? There’s no physical health day, it’s woven into the very fabric of our daily lives. Today reminds us, but the real change happens when we recognise, understand, and prioritise mental health every single day. Let's do better, not just today but every day to acknowledge mental health.

It was amazing to be apart of the AP Taskforce Presnetaion day with over 150 professionals in attendance. Everyone who presented did incredibly well at showcasing the work they have been doing. It was an honour to share the stage and day with such brilliant minds and get a greater insight into some of the work that is happening in this city.

I had an opportunity to share a little of my story and highlight some of the significant work we have been doing at Belgrave Mind. It’s always refreshing to see how an audience react to the work you do and today was no different.

I want to thank everyone for the support and all of the team at Cobs for putting on such a great event.

We’re looking forward to what the future holds and can’t wait to see what comes next.

Stress Awareness Day

Sometimes we take the impact stress can have for granted. Stress can impact our mental and physical health and can lead to burnout. Stress can start out as something so minimal but can quite quickly snowball out of control.

We have to ensure we have coping strategies to help relieve stress. There are many different tools that could be used when dealing with stress; reading, walking, music, talking, breathing exercises, sleep etc.

Therapy is a great way to help with stress, whether it’s somebody to talk to, vent to, shout at or cry to. The process of therapy can help you manage the stress and find other ways of copping and managing stress.

What tools do you use to help with stress?

Yes it’s su***de prevention day (10th September), however su***de prevention is everyday. With the rise of social media we are seeing more and more cases on a day to day basis of su***de across industries.

We need to communicate with each other. It doesn’t always have to be a professional. It can be a trusted adult, friend, family member colleague. Please don’t suffer in silence. Look after each other, check in with one another and try to be as open as possible about the feelings or emotions that you have (especially boys and men as statistically and socially they don’t hence su***de rates being higher amongst males).

For people affected by someone attempting to committing su***de it’s also important you look after yourselves also. Su***de affects more people than we know so let’s work together.
