A pterygium is a benign (non-cancerous) growth of tissue that grows onto the surface of the eye, usually from the white part towards the cornea.

☀️ It is more common in people who have spent time in hot, sunny climates, particularly with long-term UV exposure.

A pterygium can change your glasses prescription by altering the shape of the cornea.

🔬 It can also make cataract surgery measurements more difficult, as accurate corneal measurements are important when selecting the correct intraocular lens.

If you have both a pterygium and a cataract, your ophthalmologist may need to consider the pterygium when planning cataract surgery.
