In Ayurveda, the ancient science of yoga, this shift from Spring to Summer is associated with the pitta dosha. Pitta combines the fluidity of water with the heat of fire.
Just as water can extinguish fire, and fire can cause water to boil or create steam, pitta governs transformation within us, such as our metabolism and digestion, as well as acting as an internal thermometer for the body, mind and emotions- keeping us balanced and full of life.
This balance has really been playing out in the weather recently. One moment it's warm sunshine, the next cool rain, showing us that transformation and change isn't straightforward.
If pitta is out of balance, we may feel angry, obsessive, impatient, irritable or competitive, causing us to boil over. We may experience stress or burn out.
Within your yoga practice, see if you can embody those elements of water and fire to either stoke or soothe your inner fire, and restore balance to your energies. Slow, fluid movements and gentle pauses can can ignite both grace and grit in the body, but when practiced with intention can temper the tide of the mind, soothe the nervous system, fire up prana, help us blow off steam and remain in the present moment, dissipating the temptation to obsess, compare, compete, over-analyse and self-criticise, allowing us to comply bathe in the transformation and changes the practice creates within.
When pitta is in balance, our digestion of food, information and life is stronger. We are energised, sharp-minded, ambitious, focussed, patient, loyal and kind. We have just the right amount of fire to fuel our passions, yet also the ability to remain unswayed, true to ourselves and grounded in this ever changing world. accepting of our own inner seasons, phases and evolution.
