NEW: Mindfulness Now Position Statement on Safe and Professional Mindfulness Practice

As mindfulness becomes increasingly available through apps, online courses and self-paced programmes, an important question is emerging:

How do we make mindfulness more accessible while ensuring it remains safe, ethical and professionally delivered?

At Mindfulness Now, we believe this doesn't have to be an either/or conversation.

The evidence shows that self-paced mindfulness programmes can make mindfulness more accessible and help many people improve their wellbeing. We welcome these innovations and recognise the important role they play in widening access.

At the same time, we believe professionally taught, attendance-based mindfulness programmes continue to offer unique benefits—particularly where participants may need greater personalisation, psychological safety, reflective inquiry or support. This is especially important when working with trauma, complex life experiences, or in professional and therapeutic settings.

Our new Position Statement explores:

What the latest research tells us
The differences between self-paced and teacher-led mindfulness
Why safety and professional standards matter
How both approaches can work together to support wellbeing

Our vision is simple:

Mindfulness should be both accessible and safe.

We believe the right mindfulness should be delivered in the right way, with the right level of support, for the right person.

We'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences.

We're delighted to share the findings of a recent independent study conducted by researchers at the University of Lincoln, exploring the experiences of the Mindfulness Now 8 week programme.

Although this was a small pilot study, the findings are encouraging.

Participants reported improvements in:
Wellbeing
Stress
Anxiety
Relaxation
Emotional resilience

The study also highlighted the importance of personal development and asupportive community.

As with any pilot study, these findings are early evidence, and the researchers have identified valuable lessons that will help inform a larger-scale evaluation in the future.

At Mindfulness Now, we're committed to continually learning, improving, and building the evidence that supports our work.

Over the past few years, Nick Cooke and Madeleine Agnew have developed the N.I.A. Language Model™ for the Mindfulness Now Programme.

N.I.A. stands for:

Non-Directive
Invitational
Adaptive

At its heart is a simple but powerful idea:

Rather than telling people what to do, we can communicate in ways that offer choice, encourage autonomy, and build psychological safety.

A small shift in language can create a very different experience.

As conversations around trauma-informed practice, psychological safety, and human connection continue to grow, we believe the words we choose matter more than ever.

The N.I.A Trauma Informed Language Model

Have you ever tried mindfulness through an app, found your mind wandering, and thought, "This isn't for me"?

You're not alone.

Many people try mindfulness once or twice and give up because they think they're doing it wrong, don't notice immediate benefits, or simply get bored. But mindfulness isn't about having an empty mind, and it's certainly not a quick fix.

Learning mindfulness is much more like learning a musical instrument. It takes time, practice, and often the support of a skilled teacher who can guide you through the process.

In our latest blog, we explore:
Why your mind wandering is completely normal
Why mindfulness takes time to develop
The role of neuroplasticity and regular practice
How qualified mindfulness teachers can help
Where to find professional mindfulness support in the UK

If you've ever wondered what everyone is talking about when they mention mindfulness, this article is for you.

Thank you 🙏

We’re so grateful to everyone who attended, contributed, supported and helped make the event such a success. The energy in the room was incredible, and it was lovely to see our community coming together again.

We’re already looking ahead, so please keep Saturday 15th May 2027 free for next year’s Celebration Day — we’d love to welcome you back for another inspiring and uplifting event!
Thank you again for being part of it ❤️

Living with Parkinson’s disease has profoundly shaped the way Nick Cooke, creator of the the Mindfulness Now programme, understands mindfulness, compassion, trauma, and what it truly means to live well with a chronic illness.

In this deeply personal blog, Nick shares his journey through illness, meditation, trauma, acceptance, and how these experiences led to the creation of the Mindfulness Now approach — an adaptable, trauma-informed, person-centred way of teaching mindfulness that is all about meeting people where they are.

We hope this story offers encouragement, compassion, and hope to anyone navigating illness, change, or difficult times. đź’™
