This is something you’ll hear me say.
If you’ve ever spent time around our furry friends, you’ll have witnessed them having a good stretch and yawn throughout the day.
This action is called pandiculation and is an involuntary response of the nervous system to wake up the sensorimotor system and prepare the body for movement. It occurs within most animal species (including us humans) and is closely linked to biological behaviours like the sleep/wake cycle.
If we pandiculate why do I suggest being more cat? As babies we regularly stretch and yawn, but as we age we become busier, more overloaded and more stressed losing these habitual biological responses required to keep us supple.
A good stretch and yawn is not only important to our health and well-being it’s also necessary for the optimal functioning of our neuromuscular system. Without pandiculation our muscles and fascia become increasingly tight, leading to structural imbalances such as poor posture, limited range of motion and pain in our joints.
So be more cat and stretch throughout the day. Before you get out of bed, have a big stretch to wake your body up. At work, stretch regularly at your desk, stretch after getting out the car. Stretch anywhere you want if you're feeling tired.
Bring pandiculation back into your habitual processes. It feels great and is great for your body!
