Dietitians Week Wednesday - Our Celebrations

Sharing this lovely video made by Charlotte and my QE colleagues. We posted it on LinkedIn (UHB Therapy), but seems a shame not to share it wider 💙

My work in 60 seconds

Especially for Dietitians Week 2026 a little glimpse into our IMD world. I started my job as an IMD dietitian in 2008… 18 years ago… I love it so much I have never left! ❤️

It’s !

Celebrating our vocation today.
My team and I all came to dietetics in different ways, but one thing we all agree on is that we all love food!!

I decided I wanted to be a dietitian when I was 15 (my mum was a physiotherapist and introduced me to different AHP jobs!), so chose my A levels appropriately and went on to do an undergrad degree in nutrition and dietetics. Never looked back since!

Today I attended the BDA prescribing sub group first study day. It was great to hear how other people are implementing prescribing into their practice, the great work being done and also some of the challenges (mainly clinical management plan paper work 😂).

I qualified as a non medical prescriber in 2023 and have now been supplementary prescribing for a year. After 15 years working in IMD / PKU and with the introduction of the first medication for PKU it seemed like a natural progression.
Often a medication goes hand in hand with diet management - insulin, PERT, phosphate binders and of course sapropterin for PKU. This puts dietitians in a perfect position to prescribe.

To qualify dietitians undertake the exact same course and exams as nurses, physiotherapist, pharmacists, podiatrist who become independent prescribers. Due to the law dietitians can only become supplementary prescribers. We have to be attached to an independent prescriber and write clinical management plans for each patient so we can prescribe the medication on the plan for a year.

The BDA are campaigning to get independent prescribing rights for dietitians. We need to collect and publish our data to show our worth as safe patient centred prescribers which will help the case to becoming independent prescribers 💪💫.

I chose dietetics because…

At school we filled out a career questionnaire. I put that I liked food and that I liked caring for people. One of the career choices was dietitian!

My mum was a physiotherapist at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital so she helped my arranged my work experience for a few days at SCH and the Northern General dietitian department.

I loved it so choose my A Levels around getting into the undergrad uni course for Nutrition and Dietetics. I remember the excited feeling upon getting a place at Surrey University, then choosing to go to Liverpool to do my 31 week placement! Shout out to all the Surrey Grads out there!!

My fabulous colleague 🩵

Farah has always been a self-proclaimed foodie, and has an interest in working in healthcare for as long as she can remember, so a career in dietetics seemed like the perfect mix!

Farah says she has never felt the need to leave , because there are so many clinical areas to work in, which means she is always learning.

Having British Indian background, Farah loves to see how different cultures impact relationships between diet and health.

Read more about Farah’s journey and her role as a dietitian, in this week’s ‘We are UHB’ blog: https://bit.ly/3YeiXSo

Once again on Twitter I see a supposed doctor saying that dietitians are liars?

Why are dietitians subject to this unprofessionalism from other professionals?

We are professionals that speak and listen to our patients, we take the time to get to know them on an individual level and tailor the diet for them accordingly to thier medical, social and medication history.

One diet does not fit all!!

We wrote this post a few years back, but still rings true!

Dietitians have the education, training and experience to tailor our advice to the individual and give realistic advice.
