CARE EXPLAINED: WHAT IS REABLEMENT?

You might hear the word reablement when someone has been unwell, had an injury or come home from hospital, but what does it actually mean?

Reablement is short-term support designed to help someone regain their confidence, skills and independence.

Rather than simply doing things for someone, the focus is on doing things with them and helping them get back to doing as much as they can for themselves.

That could mean practising things like:
*Getting washed and dressed
*Preparing a meal
*Moving safely around the home
*Managing the stairs
*Building confidence with everyday tasks

The aim is to help someone become as independent as possible and, where appropriate, reduce the amount of support they need.

And when reablement comes to an end, some people may still need ongoing care and support.

That's where homecare can come in 😊

At Blakewater Homecare, we're here to support people to live safely and as independently as possible in their own homes, whether that's after reablement or as part of their longer-term care needs.

Because sometimes the goal isn't to do more for someone. It's to help them do more for themselves.

Today is all about celebrating our four-legged friends and the happiness, companionship and unconditional love they bring into our lives.

We know how important pets can be to the people we support, they're not just pets, they're family!

Aw, this is wonderful news!!

One of our service users was recently supported and encouraged to obtain a new wheelchair. Despite having extensive adaptations made to his home, including lifts and widened doorways, he rarely ventured outside and spent most of his time in his bedroom.

Fast forward to today, and what a transformation! With his new wheelchair, he has independently taken himself to the local shop and then on to the pub. As I write this, he's sitting in the sunshine enjoying a pint while waiting for his support worker to collect him. ☀️🍺

It's amazing how something that may seem quite small can have such a huge impact on someone's independence, confidence, wellbeing, and outlook on life. Today isn't just about a new wheelchair; it's about freedom, choice, community, and getting part of his life back!
