🩸 "I thought it was just a dodgy bladder."

That's how Brian's prostate cancer journey began.

Recently, at the Lancashire & South Cumbria Cancer Alliance Early Diagnosis of Prostate Cancer Workshop, we had the privilege of meeting Brian and hearing his story firsthand.

Like many men, Brian put his symptoms down to something minor. But when he finally spoke to his GP, a series of routine tests, including a PSA blood test, revealed prostate cancer.

The good news? It was caught early.

Thanks to early diagnosis and treatment, Brian is now cancer-free and passionate about encouraging other men to get checked.

What really struck us was how simple the first step was. A PSA test is just a blood test. It takes minutes, but it can start a conversation that could ultimately save a life.

Brian has since encouraged friends to get tested too, with several receiving early diagnoses and treatment because they took action.

His message is simple:

🎀 Help Us Help You: When your NHS breast screening invitation arrives, save the date. 📅

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in England, and the chance of developing it increases as you get older.

Regular breast screening is one of the best ways to spot cancer early, often before it can be seen or felt. It saves around 1,300 lives every year in the UK. 💗

If you're registered with a GP as female, you'll be invited for NHS breast screening every 3 years from age 50 up to your 71st birthday. Your invitation will arrive through the post 📬

Finding cancer early can make it more likely that treatment will be successful. Or, more likely, screening will put your mind at rest. 🌷

🩸 MAN VAN UPDATE – SLIGHTLY OFF COLOUR 🚐💔

Our Man Van has unfortunately come down with a bit of a “mechanical man flu” 🤒🛠️
Nothing serious… but it’s definitely not fit for duty this week.

So we’ve had to pause and cancel the following sessions:

🛒 Wednesday 3rd June - ASDA Blackburn

🕌 Friday 5th June- Darussalam Masjid & Education Centre

We know—bad timing, bad van, worse luck. It picked a dramatic week to misbehave.

The important bit: these sessions aren’t gone, just postponed. We’ll be rescheduling and bringing everything back out once the van is back to full strength and ready to roll again 🚐💪

💙 Thanks for your patience, understanding, and for not judging the van too harshly… it’s doing its best.

We’ll be back soon—fully tuned, fully fuelled, and hopefully less dramatic.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK.

📊 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
📊 1 in 4 Black men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The challenge? Prostate cancer often shows no symptoms in its early stages.

That's why we're bringing PSA conversations, awareness and testing opportunities directly into our communities throughout June.

We’re pleased to share that our outreach van has been featured in the Lancashire Telegraph for the work we’ve been delivering across Blackburn and parts of East Lancashire.

Our team has been out in communities providing:
💉 COVID-19 vaccinations
🤧 Flu vaccinations and seasonal protection
🧬 Prostate cancer awareness, information, and testing

The focus remains on bringing essential health services closer to people, improving access, and supporting early detection and prevention in a convenient, community-based way.

A proud moment for the team seeing our work recognised locally (there may have been a small “look mum, that’s us!” moment 🚐📰).

💉 Covid Booster Clinics – Blackburn with Darwen

Covid booster vaccinations are being delivered this month across Blackburn with Darwen through a mix of community GP practices, health centres, and outreach clinic sessions, helping eligible residents stay protected.

Please note: some GP practices are providing booster vaccinations directly to their own patients, while others are supporting via community-based clinics and outreach sessions. Availability may vary by practice.

Our team will be on hand at each session to offer advice, support, and vaccinations in a friendly local setting.

• Immunosuppressed or have a weakened immune system
