Staff Appreciation Spotlight: Harry Gibbs, Funeral Service Manager ⭐🎩
This month, we're proud to shine a spotlight on our Funeral Service Manager, Harry Gibbs, whose remarkable dedication to the funeral profession spans more than 32 years.
Harry's journey into funeral directing began at just 15 years old when he completed two weeks of work experience with a local funeral director. While most teenagers wouldn't consider a funeral home for work experience, Harry believes his interest stemmed from losing his beloved Nan when he was only seven years old, followed by another family bereavement. The care and compassion shown to him and his family during those difficult times left a lasting impression.
Determined to join the profession, Harry admits he "pestered" local funeral directors until someone gave him a chance. At 17, he started on an a YTS scheme which paid £29.50 per week, carrying out tasks such as washing vehicles, cleaning the premises and helping to build coffins. Through hard work, passion and commitment, he progressed through the ranks to become a Funeral Director and later a Manager.
Harry joined Blackburn Funeral Services in 2009 and has never looked back.
When asked what he enjoys most about his role, Harry's answer is simple:
"I just like finding out about people. Everyone has a story. Helping families through the funeral and hearing them say thank you means everything."
Over the years, those thanks have come in many forms from heartfelt cards, kind words, biscuits and even the occasional bottle of whisky. However, what humbles Harry most is when families he cared for decades ago seek him out again.
"People I've looked after 20 years ago have tracked me down and said they wouldn't use anyone else. That's a real honour."
Like many funeral professionals, Harry admits there are difficult moments. Funerals for people he knows personally, or when he develops a close connection with a family, can be particularly emotional.
"You feel so sad for the family. Sometimes it's impossible not to be affected."
Outside of work, Harry enjoys spending time with his wife, two children and their dog, Dezmond. Most weekends you'll find him in his role as "Dad Taxi", often supporting his daughter from the side-lines as she plays football.
For those considering a career in funeral directing, Harry's advice is straightforward:
"Persistence. Keep trying to gain experience and embrace the role. This isn't just a job, it's a calling. If you don't have a genuine passion for caring for people, it's not the vocation for you."
Harry is also a strong supporter of increased regulation within the funeral profession and is proud to hold the DipFD (Diploma in Funeral Directing) awarded by the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD). He believes professional standards and transparency are vital to ensuring families receive the highest level of care.
Originally from Oswaldtwistle, Harry has a great affection for Blackburn and Lancashire.
"The people here are lovely, down to earth, with no airs and graces. I always try to put people at ease and meet them where they are."
When asked what he wishes people knew about funeral directors, his answer reflects the compassion that has defined his career:
"We're just normal, everyday people. We have a sense of humour, we're human beings, and we genuinely care. If anyone wants to know more about what we do, I'm always happy to show them around."
Thank you, Harry, for your unwavering commitment, compassion and professionalism. Your dedication to supporting families through some of life's most difficult moments makes you an invaluable part of Blackburn Funeral Services.
