An interesting (and sad) case of contact lens related blindness. Respect your contact lenses folks, the consequences are grave otherwise. If you need advice on contacts lens related best practice, reach out to us

This is Emma Marsden. The mum-of-three was left requiring a corneal transplant after parasites "ate through" her eye following a mishap at the stables.

The 47-year-old, from Whalley, washed her face while still wearing her contact lenses after an eventful day with her horses. She had been mucking out the stables when she tumbled headfirst into a wheelbarrow filled with dirt and water, leaving her caked in mud.

In a decision she would come to deeply regret, she washed her face but didn't remove her contact lenses until later that evening.

Four days later, Emma noticed a stinging sensation in her right eye, which soon escalated into "excruciating" pain, prompting her GP to refer her to hospital. She described the agony as so unbearable that it made giving birth to her three children feel like "a dream" by comparison.

Despite initial tests returning clear results, doctors suspected an ulcer and discharged her with eye drops. However, her condition rapidly deteriorated over the following days, and she lost all vision in the affected eye.

Emma was subsequently diagnosed with acanthamoeba keratitis, a rare eye infection caused by a parasite that burrows into the cornea. As the infection worsened, she underwent a procedure to have her eyelids stitched together after the parasite had "eaten through" her cornea, and she was prescribed hourly eye drops.
