Play - the important thing you will do today?

Whether it's playing peep, building with blocks, creating imaginary worlds, playing shops or taking turns in a board game... everyday play provides countless opportunities for children to develop their speech, language and communication skills.

Through play, children learn to:
• Connect with others
• Listen and take turns.
• Understand and use new vocabulary.
• Express their thoughts, ideas and feelings.
• Develop problem-solving and storytelling skills.
• Build confidence in communicating with others.

The best part? You don't need expensive toys or carefully planned activities. Following your child's lead, talking about what they're doing and enjoying time together can make a meaningful difference.

This summer, try setting aside a little time each day for child-led play. Those everyday moments are where communication grows.

At Communicate SLT CIC, we're passionate about supporting families and professionals to create communication-rich environments where every child has the opportunity to thrive.

How do you encourage communication through play at home, in the classroom or in your setting? We'd love to hear your ideas.

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) affects learning, relationships, and wellbeing across the lifespan. At adolescence, cognitive and social demands increase, an aspect of development that must be integrated in planning intervention. This presentation explores how language abilities relate to adolescents’ development of self-knowledge, a foundation for self-determination. It focusses on school-based interventions that treat language as a target of intervention while adding the notion of language as a tool for self-understanding. Working with school personnel, adolescents engage in activities that build communication and reflection skills. Supporting language in everyday settings and with familiar partners offers a promising pathway to strengthen self-knowledge, participation, and autonomy in young people with DLD.

Love these support goals - make magical memories this summer everyone😁

Play is central to children's learning, development and wellbeing. Through play, children build confidence, creativity, problem-solving skills and meaningful connections with others. Summer provides the perfect opportunity to embrace spontaneous, joyful and unhurried play both indoors and outdoors.

Developed by PlayBoard Northern Ireland, the Summer of Play Challenge encourages children to get outdoors, explore their surroundings, be active, use their imagination and engage in child-led experiences.
