β˜€οΈ Hot weather is here! Our maternity team is here to help you keep your newborn cool and safe with these simple but important tips πŸ‘ΆπŸ’›

πŸ‘ΆπŸ» Keep your baby out of direct sunlight β€” their delicate skin is highly sensitive to UV rays

πŸŒ‚ Use a clip-on sunshade or parasol on the pram β€” avoid blankets or muslins as they can trap heat

🌑️ Aim for a room temperature of 16Β°C to 20Β°C β€” a room thermometer can help you keep track

πŸŒ€ Use a fan to circulate air, but never leave it running unattended while baby sleeps

🏠 Open windows and keep blinds or curtains closed during the day to help rooms stay cooler

πŸ“± You can view or download our full guide to extreme heat for newborns to keep handy on your phone or tablet: https://ow.ly/b7gM50Wcnao

πŸ”— More information from NHS UK: https://www.nhs.uk/baby/first-aid-and-safety/safety/safety-in-the-sun

πŸ’™ Stay cool, stay safe β€” and don’t hesitate to contact your midwife or health visitor with any concerns.

🌑️ Hot weather can make homes uncomfortable and increase health risks, especially for older people, babies, young children and those with health conditions.

🏑 Help keep your home cool by:
βœ… Closing blinds and curtains on windows in direct sunlight
βœ… Spending time in the coolest part of your home
βœ… Opening windows when it is cooler outside than indoors and it is safe to do so

Take care in the hot weather. β˜€οΈ

β˜€οΈ Heading out in the hot weather?

High temperatures can affect anyone, but some people are more at risk, including older adults, babies, young children and those with long-term health conditions.

Stay well by:
πŸ’§ Drinking plenty of fluids
🌳 Staying in the shade when the sun is strongest (11am–3pm)
πŸƒ Avoiding strenuous physical activity during the hottest part of the day

Take care of yourself and check in on family, friends and neighbours who may need extra support.

During this heatwave, it’s important to know that some mental health medications can affect how your body responds to heat, increasing the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

This can include some antidepressants, antipsychotics and anti-anxiety medicines.

If you take medication:
πŸ’§ Drink plenty of water
🏠 Stay cool and avoid the hottest part of the day
πŸ’Š Keep medicines stored according to the instructions and out of direct heat and sunlight
⚠️ Never stop taking prescribed medication without medical advice

If you feel unwell, dizzy, confused, unusually agitated, or think you may be experiencing heat exhaustion, seek medical advice.

For more information, speak to your pharmacist, GP, NHS 111, or visit the NHS and GOV.UK heat health guidance - www.gov.uk/guidance/mental-health-medications-and-extreme-weather
